It turns out they do make a tool to rotate these two-hole retaining rings.

Two-hole wrench

The trouble I've had using tweezers to turn two-hole rings is that either the tweezers deform because they aren't strong enough, or they slip out of the holes, risking damage to the lens. I imagine one could rig up a tool similar to this using cheaply-available parts. A compass that uses an adjusting nut to set the radius comes to mind.

I got a nice pair of tweezers from fleebay and they seem to work very well so far! :beer:

A pair of thin needle nose pliers normally do the job for me! :beer:

I use a pair of snap ring pliers. Cheap at HF, and you will probably use them for their main purpose as well.

I'm thinking that a "two hole" modification to the Survival Lasers C6 heatsink would be one way of preventing the heatsink/module from turning as the host parts are tightened down.

I wish I weren't so god**** broke so I could actually try some of this stuff....

eww, that professional one looks fairly crappy... Not that it matters, but why are there half-assed threads running down one arm? I mean, yeah, it's only $50, but that's a lot for a mass-produced thing that isn't even a precision tool.

I'm a cheap bastid, but I got a heatsink from FP, and it had the most perfect fit! So, yeah. Also, he might be able to make them out of other materials like plastic or delrin or something, that will be less likely to damage things like lenses should you slip while you are trying to loosen it.

I like that heavy-duty pin wrench. It would be really great to have the C6 copper heatsinks drilled for a tool like that, sized to fit through the C6 front bezel, so that one could use it to hold the heatsink and module steady while tightening down the host components.

ETA: Just ordered the C6 host kit and copper heatsink

You could also use what is called dividers (also available at HF). Looks like a compass, but has 2 pointed ends instead of 1 and a pencil holder. Used for doing lay-out work in a machine shop.

SO that's what those are! I just called them "those spring-loaded chopsticks for reading maps"
