The questions that come to mind are:

1. How far was the guy from the troops?
2. How powerful was the laser?

Here's what most of us would agree on:

1. Sniper rifles are rarely accurate beyond one mile, especially if the target is moving. Regular military-issue weapons have even lower accuracy.
2. An adequately powerful green laser can cause flash blindness at several miles.
3. Most bullets travel below 1 mi/s, while light travels at about 186,000 mi/s.

Wow. Thats terrible, but what do you expect? Shine a laser at a guy with a gun in an extremely unstable area, and you're going to get shot.

Yeah, because the protests in Bangkok are a lot closer to home here we get a lot more news about the Thai red shirts / yellow shirts protesters.
Its crazy over there man. The protesters are wacked. The cops are even more wacked.
For instance, the riot police were shooting their riot shotguns into the sky in an effort to disperse the red shirt protesters, and somehow old matey riot copper shoots his buddy copper next to him right in the face with his shotgun.
Dead. Friendly fire, per se.
Also, the police are very jumpy because they have realized the pro-ex prime minister protesters are so well equipped, one protester was even apprehended with possession of over 60 x M433 40mm grenades. They are the "gold top" HEDP grenades used in the M79 and M203 grenade launchers. Pretty much military/terrorist grade hardware.
Trigger happy cops who are insanely jumpy due to such high grade threats = dont shine lasers at them.

Duh.. what was he thinking.

but seriously, *16 people have been killed and 160 injures* I'm pretty sure he woulda got it no matter what just for protesting or just being there. some places, like there (thailand) if you disagree with the government..they will just kill you. Openly. Protesting is NOT a worldwide birthright by law. It can/will get you killed depending on the region of the world you are in.

*if you dont like the election results. Too Bad!! :gun:

Man that's stupid, why would you point a laser at anybody, but this guy 1-UP'ed it by pointing it at a guy with a gun.

That's just dumb, needless death. Darwinism in action?

WOW! what stupidity, there are some things you just don't do... like point a laser at a guy with a gun, or say you have a bomb on an airplane. Another thing you shouldn't do is not change the toilet paper roll when you use the last of it! :p

I cant give specifics here, but I can speculate.
I was in Bangkok in December, and there was heaps and heaps of shops selling lasers. I personally purchased a "200mW" laser for $20 (although after we agreed on $20 for 200mW they tried to give me a 20mW one...), which I can say does have quite a good amount of power. It far outshines my DX200mW dilda and the PHR-803T I made (running 100mA)

So they do have the opportunity to get their hands on some fairly high powered stuff, unfortunately they just used it in the wrong way...

I have a 50mw green Laser mounted to a weapon....
If I see ANY Laser pointed in my general direction...
I will assume it is mounted on a weapon... :gun:

he apparently didn't know that a laser beam can be seen both ways, hitting someone trying to shoot at you with the beam of a spotlight has a better chance of living than a laser.

If this was in daylight, at minimum it had to have been over 35mw...or it would be visible only to the individual who was struck my the far side of the beam, but either way it appears this man asked for his own execution by singling himself out =/

It disgusts me, not that protests are taking place as protests are likely to be inevitable, but that the media people find this sort of things newsworthy

I'm with Jerry, if I see a laser dot on my chest, I'm whipping out the .45 and getting behind cover ASAP.
The guy probably was not thinking that he would be viewed as a threat , but he just wanted to be an annoyance to the LEA's.
I have done some stupid stuff in my life, only now, looking back and realizing how dangerous and stupid, they were. But at the time not thinking it through.
Also there is a phenomenon in protests, that do to "crowd mentality", the violence and stupidity will escalate beyond reason. IE: riots with looting and burning of a neighborhood that have been committed by residents of that same neighborhood.???
