I own a Dragon Lasers Hulk 100mW that takes 2 C batteries and I would like to know if there is a suitable rechargeable battery that would work as a replacement. I know they sell NiMH and NiCD batteries in a size C. Which would you guys recommend. Or is there a Li-Ion battery that would work (I don't think there is but I could always be wrong). I'm basically getting sick of wasting money on disposable C batteries so any help would be greatly appreciated. :thanks:

well lion sized c batteries would blow your laser if its designed for 3v and your giving it 8.4 at full charge bad idea. IIRC nimh are better than Nicd idk why....but you may loose power. you will loose run time

I think you'd be alright using ONE of these:
LiFePO4 26650 Rechargeable Cell: 3.2V 3300 mAh, 16.5A Rate, 10Wh - UN approved (NDGR)
And then just grab these to use as spacers instead of a second cell:
10 Cylinder Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets N35 5mm x 10mm | eBay

3.2V nominal instead of the 3V nominal that your laser is built for. I would be really surprised if that extra 0.2V was a problem. The driver in your laser is either linear or buck, because even as designed it needs to regular the 3V input down at least a bit to get to the IR diode's Vf of somewhere around 2.5V. In either case, I can't see an extra 0.2V being a problem.

Of course, that cell is a LifePo4, so you'll need a charger capable of charging it.

This battery would be 3.6V fully charged.

If you can confirm that your driver can handle that voltage you could use it with a dummy c sized spacer.:beer:

EDIT never mind I was thinking D sized.:tinfoil: I would go with RHD's idea.

you could also use a diode to drop the voltage

i forgot what kind of diode its called but some have a .7v dropout IIRC

I think a fully charged Alkaline can be up to 1.7V. The 1.5V figure we're used to thinking of Alkalines as, is ALSO a nominal figure.

That's a decent plan too. You could use a standard 3.7V 22650, and then for the second cell, grab one of these:
2 X Converter Adaptor White Case AA to C Size Battery A | eBay
And wire it with a single through-hole diode running down it's length.

I think probably though, your best bet is using the cell DTR linked you to. It's a 3V lithium ion. I'm not sure how you'd charge it, but otherwise, it should work.

I linked to a D sized cell. I had 32600's on the brain.:tinfoil: But with either cell you could use a WF-188 in 3.2V mode which has a cutoff of 3.6V and can fit larger cells.;)





I also just came across these in a search and they may be a winner. 23mmX43mm "The highest capacity of NiMH sub C cell on the market, which has similar energy density as A123A 26500 Li-Ion cell, but lower cost"

First of all I want to thank all of you for the help, answering so quickly and the good ideas. I think I am going to use the NiMH that DTR posted right now for simplicity but I really like the idea of using a diode and a spacer and using a single Li-Ion so I might try that out soon. That's a Sub C, which is not a C sized cell. You just want 2 of these. Amazon.com: 8 pcs of Tenergy C Size 5000mAh High Capacity High Rate NiMH Rechargeable Batteries: Electronics

NiMH is better then NiCd because NiCds are subject to battery memory effect
