Re: Aquarius 473nm DPSS problem?

Mr penguin..... may be a lpm video of the laser over 90 seconds? and the one with the dot on the paper as you move away from the laser?

and have you contact laser glow? showing them the laser start dropping power after 40 secs and the beam turn Tem01?

Hey Isaac,

I haven't done either. I will try later tonight running the laser for 70sec and seeing what happens to the dot over that period of time. I don't have an LPM unfortunately. It is very worrying how warm the host gets in 50sec. though :/

Edit: I think the beam is ALWAYS TEM01. It's hard to see from far away but it was the same thing yesterday when I showed it in the *mini-review*.

Edit #2: Hm.....Justin from Laserglow in a previous LPF post mentioned these pens can be TEM00-TEM01. Not sure if I should still contact them. Maybe about the warmth of the host?

Re: Aquarius 473nm DPSS problem?

Hey folks,

I just got my 473nm from Laserglow about 2 days ago but noticed something very strange, and wrong...

Issue #1: Laserglow claims this laser has a duty cycle of 90sec. However, after only about 50sec. the host feels very warm to the touch already?!?!

Issue #2: The laser operates in TEM01 once you move far enough away from the device. Do keep in mind it is supposed to have a divergence of <1mrad. The room it is being run in is at 74degrees so it isn't too hot, nor too cold. I have also tried heating the laser in my hand and letting it run for 40sec. to see what happens.

I payed $549 for this laser, so I would expect nothing but perfection. My other two are just fine....never had a thing like this for DPSS. I do know 473nm can be tricky but isn't Laserglow supposed to check all this? Or am I overreacting? Below are some pictures of how bad it is and where the laser was placed.

Any help for a veteran? Thank you all! :)

Tell Laserglow you are not happy with it and wish to exchnge it for a different and better example. For the high price paid you want a better example or to return if for a refund.

Laserglow is nothing special -- just an overpriced Canadian reseller of CNI lasers--Laserglow gets what they get--what CNI ships them.

Thanks Encap!

I did see that Justin mentioned that these 473nm pens do tend to go into TEM01 at times but my previous 473 from them never had this issue!

I think I may actually head back into JetLasers for my laser needs. Laserglow isn't worth this high price ugh.

I see Jetlasers has 473nm up to 100mW, for less then what I payed for this! YIKES!

Anyone know the duty cycles on it? Is it 100%?

i think so. with that much aluminium.....i'm talking about holding a lasing dumbbell here.... *Pumping iron while lasing*gaining guns from just waving your laser around. and there's a reseller in Australia as well....they build the laser here...and no custom headache what so ever...

Hm....

I'll send Laserglow an email about how it is operating and see what they think. :yh:

The laserglow Aquarius is mainly about the small size and being eye safe. If your goal is value I'd say you should look for just about anything else.

Hey Razako,

It isn't so much value for me. When it comes to lasers I don't mind paying top dollar for something I'll keep for years. I actually am glad these are eye safe, I can mess around with them without any worries.

I'll try another run for 80 sec. and see what happens...

Re: Aquarius 473nm DPSS problem?

Tried it again for 60sec. and no TEM01 mode  It was mode shifting for a little though.

Also with a <1.5mrad divergence how big is the dot supposed to be oh 15-20feet away? Mine isn't a nice round dot, but is a little blurry about 50% the size of a penny?

Yay

Re: Aquarius 473nm DPSS problem?

nice the problem is resolved i guess?

It seems so. I ran the little guy for 73sec first, let it get nice and bright and gave it a 30sec. rest. When I turned it back on I didn't see any TEM01, from the same distance! It was a blurry oval looking dot however, but hopefully that's normal with the divergence.

Stupid DPSS :/

Using this calculator it says that at 1.5mrad your beam diameter would be 9.144mm at 20ft. If you are less than 1.5mrad then even smaller at 1.4mrad it is 8.53mm.

Re: Aquarius 473nm DPSS problem?

An old time veteran here to help a posting veteran. :)

From what we talked about in PMs and from what I'm reading here, I believe your laser to be operating as designed.

I've had an Aquarius for nearly ten years. Mine was from the first batch of pulsed blue colored host 473nm lasers produced by CNI after they killed the grey host CW ones. These lasers are EXTREMELY temperature sensitive. If it's even slightly chilly, it'll drop modes. If it gets warm, it'll drop modes. If you look at it wrong, it'll drop modes lol.

Per your request, I measured the divergence of my laser. At the aperture, it is 1.5mm. At 16 feet, it's 7mm, which gives a divergence of 1.127 mRad. At the time I bought my laser, LG advertised <1.5mRad. To calculate your laser's divergence, use this link:

http://www.pseudonomen.com/lasers/calculators/mRadCalculator.html

If you're used to looking at custom diode builds that can get .2-.3 mRad divergences, this laser will look like it has horrendous divergence. It's also important to measure your laser when it is running at it's best. If its off peak and not in TEM00, the divergence will be noticeably worse.

Haha, this laser is trying to mess with me :D

Im going to fire it up again, let it get to it's brightest point and try 2 measurements and will take a picture of the dot at about 10 feet. I will take my first measurement at 5ft, and the final one at 10ft.

I appreciate the help folks. Here goes!
