Hi,
Just to throw this out there how many here live in a rural area and don't have to worry about laseing outdoors compared to city dwelling folk who are more prone to litigation for the use of lasers.. i my self live in a rural horse community with crop fields. I'm loving it beam shot anytime but i'm still very cautious ..

I avoid attention and unfortunately I live in a suburban neighborhood.
I find the air traffic, foot traffic, and vehicle traffic are non existent for the most part around 3am, I'm a middle age guy so I get up to urinate sometimes and if it's the magic hour I may indulge a bit.

A tip for all, as well as looking deep into the sky for airplanes I also listen, if hear one even if it's far away and flying away I never take any chances.
Always wait for a clear sky, early am is a good time.

I would love to live way up in the mountains.

But for now extra caution is the rule.

Also if my day ends early I like to do my outdoor leaf burning during the daylight, it draws no attention that way.

But there's always the basement.

Oh, when the power goes out late night...we seem to be getting more of that, that's a glorious time, especially if it's a new moon.

Hi Red,
Thanks for sharing the time you relieve your self in the morning hours. i shouldn't talk i'm 56yrs i'm up around 4;00 EST. Back the to the post yes i am very cautious about the way i beam at night to. always watching and listening for air traffic . it's no joke now a days with all the crazies messing up our hobby.
As for leaf burning i just blow them into the woods i have 8 acres and surrounded by wooded areas. Winter time its the only time i see my neighbors when the leave fall and there acres away,

So you can see all the stars and you get some nice dark conditions during the new moon phase.
That's great, I did some work in a well to do house and then they wanted curtains hung in their hunting cabin, on 500 acres.
You know the huge houses don't bother me, I don't feel poor not having the big house in the fancy neighborhood.
But that 500 acres tugged at my soul, they were building his lake out in front of the cabin and the cabin was a pretty nice house in it's self.
You could not see any neighbors anywhere, not at all.

You could walk out that cabin door and shoot your 1911 or shine your lasers, blow off some fireworks, set a old car on fire, anything you wanted to do, 500 acres is freedom.
Sigh...Someday.

Wow 500 acres now thats seclusion out were i live every where is pitch black there's no ambient light from the cities anywhere. The stars on a clear night is breath taking and the night shots aren't bad at all. I have a large home about 4300 SQ FT. on 8 acres i can shoot in my back yard and have 2- 2x4x1/2 steel plates for a back stop. But they frown on fireworks , can't blame them heavy wooded area here don't need any fires there..
From what you just described about that home i could only dream to. It's like the Free Zone so to speak..

I'm an older folk too at 50 and rarely take a laser outdoors but if I do its to shine at a tree straight on and not up as I live within about 4 miles from Rochester International Airport. Even though not many planes fly over our area I just can't take any chances. It would be awful to have some neighbor see me with a laser and call the police even though I was doing nothing wrong.
Unfortunately I have one neighbor across the street who isn't really friendly with anyone. She's a single mom with upper teen kids who are always getting into trouble and the cops have been there many many times. Had to deal with her allowing her nephew to stay with her for about 6 months recently after the place he was staying got all shot up (drug dealer) which meant of course that he was selling to all kinda of people driving up to her house at all hours. Of course this also caused her kids to act up way worse too.
I actually only called the cops on her kids one time but others called a lot more but because she is basically directly across from me and her next door neighbor wouldn't say anything against her she probably blames us for all the calls.
However, I have brought some units up to the Adirondacks where my daughter and son in law live where I can shine them around without worry of anything which has been great when we visit.

Hi P.Man
aUp state is awesome been there a lot of time west point, West Hurley, Newburgh , bear mountain. Love it up there great for beam shots no lights from the city at all it's pitch black.
As for your neighbor across from you that's sad to have to put up with that. It goes to show it can happen anywhere and kids now they don't care about things like we did. If any planes come over my house there around 30,000Ft in the flyway and never directly over my home.I have Fort Dix about 20 miles from here when they fly over you can hear the from miles away. Cobra's and apaches and DC10 transports all super loud. But thats once in a while when they have bombing excerises the atmosphere rumbles for hours.

Well I was in the Navy for 10 years before getting medically retired and it was always so amazing to be out with nothing around and being able to see a zillion stars. Would have been pretty cool to have a visible laser then although I don't think I would have been allowed to use it;)

Hi P,

Yea just imagine if you had a 6+w 445 or 450 with a beam expander on it, at night on the back of a cruiser. Wow mean beam shots and don't forget about the natural fog banks
Talk about the pics you could post LOL...I wasn't in the US Navy but i went out for tile fish 3 days out to sea at a time many times. Oh and talk about stars unbelievable sight ..

I live in the suburbs of Sacramento, California. I've shone some <5mW lasers into the sky, at trees and even used a "200mW" 532nm at Halloween to use as a flood light when kids came to our house(we made sure the dot was unfocused to it's largest and only aimed it at the ground, although it is still a very dangerous thing we did) and have never had any problems with anybody. I don't dare shine my labbies outside though, not worth the huge damages it could do :)

I have over a acre of ground mostly woods and my old grandparents house across the street we have junk up the hill so i can test beam ex-panders and shine out in my yard.

People also fire guns here like nothing. I think I'm the only one that doesn't have a gun. I have a BB rifle that shoots BBS and pellets at like 800 feet per second. and a spring powered BB pistol. As well as 3 airsoft guns including one where i mounted my 200mw 635 on perfectly.

I'm in the city, so during the summer I usually pop outside to my backyard at around 3am, just like Red and Pete, with the exception of that's actually just how late I'll stay up :shhh:
Winter is awesome though, cause at its earliest the sky gets midnight dark around 4:15ish, so there's plenty of dark time. Plus at 30 below there's not a whole lotta foot traffic, and with all the white stuff there's rarely cars going by. Winter air is pretty crisp, so a cloudless night is a relatively great one for stargazing.

Wow Bangor it's sweet out west from here there you have the advantage to get great shots and show them around.Hey 800 ft per sec. is great if you want to hunt small game. add a red dot sight it in there fun . i have a few high power .177/.20,..22 cal pistons , they are powerful i like shooting them.
Your beam back stop is great it's perfect at where your at.
