True enough, there are always 2 sides of the story. But even if it turns out L4sers was actually harassing people with his laser and called the officer a moron and showed zero respect, that STILL does not even come close to justify this action of the police officer. L4sers is a fifteen year old, the cop is supposed to be a qualified and trained professional.

@ Frothy: in NL you can file a crime report at the police department, or file a written report (usually done by a lawyer) directly to the prosecuting attorney.

Yes I agree, what the police officer done was wrong, and could have caused serious damage, but if l4sers was harrasing people that is also wrong, so in the end they would both be in the wrong and therefore both deserve punishing, granted l4sers was actually harrasing people with his laser ( we have no way of proving this ).

Whenever I use one of my more powerful lasers outside I always quickly check the target area to be sure I won't hit someone in the face. If I'm pointing at the sky I check for any planes or helicopters in the target area before turning the laser on.

When you are shining a laser around outside YOU are responsible for where the beam goes and if you shine it down a dark ally or some other place with no visibility and hit someone in the face it is YOUR fault. You're lucky that you didn't accidentally hit a cop with the laser or damage someone's eyes. Then YOU would be the one getting sued or worse.

Basically you should be glad that nobody suffered serious eye damage and drop this. Taking it further will likely accomplish nothing. In the future you should be more careful when shining lasers outside.

Razako is right, you need to be really careful with lasers, yes they are fun, but they can be dangerous if mis-used.

Pretty hypothetical. He didn't shine it at a plane or a helicopter, nor did he do actual damage with the laser. Fact remains the action of the cop is unacceptable, I find it a bit troubling there are quite some people here who think so lightly regarding such an incident. Probably a cultural difference or something. In NL I reckon he would have a good case.

My family and friends were also amazed that a police officer would actually do something like that.  
They go to school and are trained to handle a case without causing anyone to be harmed.

A true 30 probably won't cause any damage at that distance. At that range the dot would be pretty big and the energy would be spread out over a large area. Even if you did hit someone in the eye the actual amount of light hitting their eye would probably be less than 5mw and entirely safe. What I said is more relevant if you are shining something >100mw like a RPL around. Of course you still need to be careful with the true 30 because even if it doesn't cause damage it will still freak people out and that leads to them calling the cops on you. Even pointing a 100% safe <5mw pointer at random people isn't a good idea because it can still distract or scare them.

The people officer shined the 30mW from 2 ft away (was standing right next to me) purposely, and he did look at the warning label on the laser.

Agreed. If you complain about the police officer it will be his word against you and your friends. Who are people going to believe? Some no good teens harassing people with an illegal laser or the respectable police officer? Unless it's on video you're basically out of luck :-/

This is exactly what I mean about reputation. If your family and friends knew 1/4 of the truth of how police officers behave, you and them would probably have a heart attack and die of shock. They are about image, "to serve and protect", and that's hardly the case. There are way too many people who are cops, and the ratio of good people who are actually qualified to be police officers is VERY LIMITED. It takes a unique individual to sustain decent order while on the job. The power really gets to their head, most cops are more good then bad, but on average, they are just normal human beings who have good days and bad days, only they get to take it out on us, the citizens. Find a cop on a good day, he'll let a true criminal go. Find a cop on a bad day, he'll arrest innocent people for no reason at all. I agree that there was no honor and it was a very immature act for the cop (person) to shine your own laser in your eye to prove a point. But as a police officer, he can do what ever he wants. Unless you have SOLID evidence, (and even then you will find hell with your MISTAKE) you will find that you have NOTHING! Usually when people fight the police in court, it involves their freedom, their record, their LIFE! Their motivation is driven from their will to survive, not for revenge or to "come-up" on some cash. There are several loop-holes the government uses to make police officers irresponsible for their actions. If a cop can shoot and kill a kid because the kid pointed a hot pink water gun at them and not be held responsilbe, you will be STOMPED in court.

Anyway, if you look at the core of this incident, you will find that the cause of it was YOU. It was a honest mistake, nobody here holds that against you (well I speak for myself :) but either the mistake was made when you bought and received your laser in the first place, or was when you shined it in public for shits and giggles and freaked someone out. YOU brought the cops. YOU caused you own retina harm. Just take it as a lesson and move on. That is the only positive you are entitled to, IMO.
