looks like a few guys are taking out red light cams with a green pointer.
I have a buddy that knows a few cops that are trying to catch a few guys killing red light cams with a pointer, I am all for the guys killing them as the cops do some shifty work to mail tickets.

did you know that they will ticket legal right on red driving??
they also cut down the yellow light from say 3 seconds to 2.5 so they can wack you??

these red light cams are nothing more than a cash grab.

You know whats easier? Just don't run red lights!

Using a laser to destroy the cameras could land you in jail very quickly, as not only were you breaking the law by running the light in the first place, but you're destroying someone else's property and could kill yourself if you're trying to hit the camera with a laser, and run into another car flying across the intersection at 100km/h. I don't know about the US, but there is actually a set distance from when the traffic lights go yellow, to when they change to red. If you are inside this distance, then its too late to stop and you can keep going, but if you are at, or before this distance, you stop. If you get a ticket for running a red light, but you think it was too late to stop, you can rebut the ticket. But that only applies if some idiot hasn't wiped out the camera with a laser pointer so that they can check ...

Not to mention the camera shutter is only open for a few milliseconds at best. Your aim would have to be spot on, and you'd have to hit it at exactly the right time, WHILE watching where you are going.

The stupidity of some people amazes me.

*Not directed at anyone, but this place is crawled by search engines very frequently so batter safe then sorry.*

Thats interesting... Are they destroying the cameras or just temporarily "blinding" them so the picture doesn't come out?

They are setting up mini tripods and aiming them at the cameras, don't get me wrong I not in favor of running lights I am in favor of having red on both sets of lights for 2 seconds to give people time to get through befor others start going, this is a simple way of making intersections safe but this way does not make money, cutting a half second from a yellow so you can not even get through the intersection sure does!
keep in mind an intersection camera is different from a red light camera.

Most of these red-light camera are run by private contractors that get to keep a significant cut of violation revenues ... so there is incentive to cheat. Many cities have been caught red-handed running yellows >0.5 seconds too fast, which is extremely dangerous. A few years ago a local news station busted the city of Dallas. Intersections with RLC's were up to a whopping 0.85 seconds faster than intersection without. Once they were made to adjust the timing to the DOT's recomendations, they were no longer profitable and had to shut some of them down.

But seriously as bad as they are ... don't do it, the risk to you and motorists is not worth it. What if someone catches a reflection from the glass that the camera sits behind?

Setting up laser-mounted tripods pointing at the camera and then waiting for a red light, turning it on, leaving it on until the red light passes and then disassembling it and going home? That doesn't look suspicious at all!

This is one of those times that the crime isn't worth the time. In jail that is. Considering the cost of the camera, and potential dangers, you're looking at a felony, plus major fines. For what? Nothing. They'll just replace them, and you'll have a new friend Bubba to play with.

Take it from me, I've done time. NOTHING is worth going to jail.

LOL, there was a debate times ago here, about the "too short time" yellow light that some places intentionally use for give unmerited tickets (one of our places had like 3600 causes against them for have a 2 seconds yellow light) ..... there was someone that said, laws say 5 or more seconds for safery, and in some countries there's also a "countdown" display near the yellow light, so a driver can see in distance the remaining time and start to brake before, for not risk to cross with red, and this can increase the safety on the streets too.

Police officer replied "countdown displays are used only in arretrate countries where they have retarded drivers, they are not needed here" ..... LOL, i personally am on the idea that we don't need similar retarded officers, here :p :D

Anyway, i have seen some of these cameras burned up, here and there ..... peoples starts to have their b*lls full, about police thievery and stupidity, and i'm wondering how much time will pass, before they go from "burn a police camera" to "burn a police station" :p

I got a red light ticket, at an intersection where a traffic cop guided me thru the light. i fought it with their own picture, which had the traffic cops arm in the picture - white glove and all.

At court, I was up 3rd. I explained to the judge about the traffic cop in the intersection, but the judge didn't buy it, even when I asked if he thought it was Michael Jackson.

Frustrated, I turned to the other people in the courtroom, and asked how many were here for this same ticket at the same time and place. over a dozen people raised their hands. Then I asked if anyone else had picture depicting more of the cops presence. Sure enough, NO ONE had a better picture of this cop...

I was just about to turn back to the judge and say something like - no one has a picture of this cop, but we all say he was there and waving traffic thru - when an old lady speaks up and says "I have a picture of that cop in my right turn ticket", and YES! she did!

the judge told everyone with a ticket from that intersection and that date to step up to the bench to have their tickets dismissed...

You got super lucky. I drive in NYC on a fairly regular basis and it is littered with traffic cameras. I had a couple of tickets from such cameras.

There is basically no disputing the tickets. I mean you can try, but in NYC at least they lowered the fine to $50 or so, and for the vast majority of people it just isn't worth $50 to spend a day in court... and I do mean a day.

What's really terrible is that if you actually talk to cops, they will tell you that the cameras have caused more accidents than they prevented.

The yellow lights ARE shortened to where if you're going even a little over the limit, I mean within 5-10mph of the limit, unless you have high performance breaks, and high traction tires, you're not gonna stop in time, and if you do, good chance you're gonna get rear ended.

BTW, one of the tickets I got, was in traffic, I was literally wedged between other cars. Doesn't matter that I was stuck in the spot for 10 minutes, unable to move and crawled to the middle of the intersection. Still had to pay.

The companies that run the cameras are for profit, and the cameras are a great money maker for the city. In the current economy... they are installing more and more cameras.

Bottom line, these cameras do more harm than good. I don't run red lights not because I'm worried about a ticket, but because I don't want to be hit by another car driving on green.

Well, few times ago, in Italy, there was a sentence that caused dismantle and confiscate the redlight cameras in one region, cause they was defined illegal from a judge (mean, the use of these devices was defined illegal) ..... guess what ? ..... all the rest of the places still use them, and justify that, claiming that the judge have defined them illegals, intending that ONLY THOSE CAMS OF THAT BRAND was illegal (regardless the fact that the judge nave NOT mentioned the brand) ..... and, with out legal system, you can be sure that they may cuntinue to steal our money for another 8 or 10 years, before another court say that the sentence was including all the brands, and the principle itself ..... if this don't mean bend the law to your side :p :D

The funny part is the camera catches your license plate before you destroy the camera witch then becomes an epic fail and you get caught.

Redlight Cameras are fcking stupid. They're just revenue grabbers run by private companies most of the time and honestly they CAUSE more accidents than they solve. I mean really what are you supposed to do if you've got a guy tailgating you heading up to a light? Slam on the breaks to avoid the ticket and risk him hitting you from behind? Fortunately they don't seem to have many where I live. If they did I'd probably be one of the people paintballing them.

I fully support destroying them by any means necessary. Just make sure you don't get caught ;) This is America. We don't wanna end up like the UK with friggen cameras watching everything everywhere. Stand up for your rights.

As far as the topic is concerned it probably is possible to destroy the camera with a laser. However you'd likely need a powerful laser with a beam expander and a tripod to aim it steady at the camera for some time. It would probably be easier to just toss paint up on them or something.

I don't think anybody should have a problem not running red lights. On the other hand their are speed cameras around where I live (DC and MD) that charge you $40+ whenever you speed past them. The tickets don't even subtract points from your license, they are strictly to make money. Those I wouldn't mind destroying.
