Re: Aries 200 vs .. Spyder II GX !?

We highly refrain from purchasing a laser from Wicked Lasers on the forum. But on a side note, the Spyder is a very good laser, although for the price and how often you will get an actual in spec laser, it is not worth buying it.

On the other hand, the Aries is a fine laser and you get what you pay for. I would recommend buying the highest output that you can afford.

Re: Aries 200 vs .. Spyder II GX !?

welcome to LPF, mushiver! personally, i'd avoid WL, and as for a 200mW laser i'd be inclined to go for an optotronics RPL from all the good things i've heard about them (beware of the techlasers shoddy clones of RPLs, though!). i plan on buying an RPL 300 when i can afford it :) from what i've heard in general about laser companies, nova, optotronics and laserglow are the ones with excellent reputations, laserglow seems a bit on the pricey side to me though. if you *do* go for laserglow, bear in mind that the hercules 250 is the same price as the aries 225 - the hercules is huge though, many people compare it to a baseball bat, but it does have the nice feature that the battery holder can be removed (reducing the size by half), then the laser head can be run from an external power supply, like a lab laser.

Re: Aries 200 vs .. Spyder II GX !?

it is definitely advisable to buy some goggles. nes_ds on this forum had 4 pairs to sell for $29 each, not sure if he has any left or if he charges extra for international shipping but it's worth a try. otherwise, there's $49 green goggles on novalasers's site, $46 ones on optotronics, the best deal out of those 2 is likely whoever can give you cheaper shipping :) wicked lasers does $39 goggles but if i remember right shipping's pretty expensive from them, and i personally will not buy anything from them on principle - <rant>i do not like their shoddy laser quality, inflated prices, and (lack of) business ethics.</rant> you *should* be ok to use a laser without goggles if you make absolutely sure that the beam will not hit anything even *vaguely* shiny/glossy/reflective, or shine it into the sky (at night it'll look great), but especially with a power level that high you *need* goggles, you don't wanna risk permanently damaging your eyes.

Thanks marianne, my first question to the LaserGlow was about the same price of the Aires 225 and the Hercules 250 :) Than I spotted the Hercules is huge.. too huge....

Good luck with your RPL300 :)

Re: Aries 200 vs .. Spyder II GX !?

Hi Mush and welcome to the forum ;D. I would really advise you to stay clear of the SpyderII series. They are having horrendous technical issues with that model at the moment, and NONE are in spec. A member of these forums has already had to RMA 3 of them back to Wickedlasers, and eventually had to get a refund (he will say who he is, if he wants).

The model I saw and used, while bright and sustaining over 200mw for a little while, had pretty bad mode shifting issues, and a very strange oval shape to its beam.

If you are after quality and great customer service then have a look at the Aries range from Laserglow
Or check out the RPL range from Optotronics

Hope this helps.

NOT a contest ! Aries WINS !!!  Aries 200 vs

Definitely - stay AWAY from the Spyder II "laser" Is is junk, that I could most likely reproduce a better, more stable working model in my modest lab. That is no joke, and not bragging, either - I am confident in my abilities, and so much LESS confident in Wicked's ability to produce a functional product. Read a LOT on this forum before you commit ANY amount of money towards a laser of the caliber of the Aries 200 - and above all else, you have been duley warned about wicked, and their shoddy product lines, and their deceptive buisness practices. I am so confident in their lack of ability that I would ALMOST PAY YOU to stay away from them, to avoid you from being a disapointed laser enthusiast.

If you're interested, we still have a really neat promotion running on the Aries-175 and an even better promotion on the Hercules-350. You could get 2 free lasers just for purchasing the Aries-175 or Hercules-350! For details see: http://www.laserglow.com/index.php?special

If you have any questions about the Aries or Hercules please don't hesitate to message me, I'm here to help!

Re: Aries 200 vs .. Spyder II GX !?

It's a good question, but the Aries-225 will still have the 100% duty cycle and no cooling issues. The laser diode is never driven at 100% power, the reason that the Aries-225 produces more output than, say, an Aries-100 is because the crystal conversion efficiency (from IR to green light) is better. There is very little increase in heat generated inside the laser.

thing is mushiver, even if you got charged tax n stuff, you'd still be paying a lot less in total, and for a far better laser! :) and justin, if i was able to impulse-spend $3000 (yeah, i wish!), you'd've just made a sale with that hercules 400 deal! hehe

Marianne: I guess you better go and get yourself a lottery ticket! We've got a lonely Hercules-400 here that needs a loving home, but if it stays here too long we'll have to put it down! ;)

Re: Aries 200 vs .. Spyder II GX !?

hey justin - lets get this straight- most people here would buy it if they had $3000. I sure as hell would. My problem is I don't own anything worth that much to sell!
