Quick questions about the lm317 driver. Yes, I do need your help again :D

Hi again. I'm sure you all have alredy read that I was having some problems with my new bluray. I found what the problem was. I thought it had a rksctr and it have a lm317. Totally my fault because I asumed this without being told about the driver.

The problem is: I've read on rog8811 website that this driver needs 9V to work with a phr. How do you guys power your phr then? I thought you were all using 2x CR2 3.6V! The problem is that when fully charged they provide 8.2V, and then the current on the diode is 80mA~, after making some tests I've found that It only regulates with 9.2-9.3V at least, then it gives 128.4mA.

The driver doesn't have a pot btw. How can I solve this? Extension tube and another battery?

What host is it? Can you fit one of the 3 X AAA holders in it? that would work.

I could try, but this would give me 4.5V? How do you guys power your blurays with the lm317 driver?

Two lithium-ion batteries (2 x 4.2 VDC) will give you 8.4 VDC fully charged.

My PHR builds have worked fine with LM317 circuits.

This is enough to power most BR diodes with a LM317 current source, if they don't require more than ~ 5.5 VDC .

Check the voltages curves posted on this forum for the various diodes.

For 8X, you need a different driver circuit.

It's a phr, but I've been testing with a variable voltage AC supply with a voltimeer on it directly wired to the module and a 1ohm resistor between the module and the supply and I've found that it only give the steady 128.4mA on 9.2V.

A 3X AAA holder will take 3X 10440's = 10.5v

lol what the hell are those batterys? It's the first time I see such a thing! Where can I get 3 batteries of those and a charger for a reasonable price?

What I don't understand is: if this driver is very commonly used here to power the blurays, and it can only be powered with these 10440 in a flashlight, how comes that I've never seen this?

The 1 ohm resistor is also dropping some voltage.

If you are familiar with electronics;

just convert the LM317 to a 6 VDC regulator,
and use a resistor to set to the current you want.

It will split the heat dissipation also.

P.S. 10440 are "AAA" size lithium ion batteries (10mm x 44mm)

I acutally don't understand anything of what you said. But I still ask: how do people do this? I can't belive I'm the first one facing this problem!

I have a number of LM317 builds with blu-rays, I use one of those holders I mentioned to get the voltage should I want to burn....I have no photo's of the build but this is my host.

So you had the same problem with the Cr2 at first? This should be sticked then, because I cant imagine the amount of people that is running incorrectly their phrs...

Link works with https instead of http :D I alredy saw those on DX, but it says they are 305mah, which means they will die in a minute :(

Ultrafire 10440's are available in 500mah (still not a LOT of runtime, but better than 300, right?) - BTW, did you get the diffraction gratings I sent yet?

10440 batteries are not good for PHR diode.
Yes, they give 12V that is enough for LM317T but they can't give enough strong current.

I use 10440 600mAh batteries from DX.

These batteries can give 100-120mA for few seconds when are full charged but then current goes down to 50-60mA.

To solve this problem I had to connect 2 pairs of 3x10440 batteries in parallel as you can see in this photo.



Charging 6 batteries is not easy :D

2x18650 looks like good chose for PHR.
They can give 8V that is enough for LM317 and can give very strong current.
Problem is size.

And yes...10440 batteries from DX are 300mAh and you can read 600mAh on them.

This is a nightmare. 8V is not enough. I'm uploading to youtube a video that will show you why I say this.

also, renno, if I have to make an extension I'm better just putting another CR2, which seems the best solution for me at the moment. Anyone have any idea on how to add it to a small flashlight mount?

2 hours lol. I think you won't be able to see it until tomorrow... It's a bit long hehe, I couldn't reduce the quality because then the multimeter screens wouldn't have been readable :(

This is strange.
I've tried to power up PHR with 2x 14500 batteries and it worked.
With 18650 it can works only better.

I thing it may vary driver to driver, with the video you will see everything clear, wait :D
