So I'm thinking about getting a sanwu laser. Either the pocket series with 200mw 405nm diode or the challenger with 300mw 405nm diode. My question is first will they both burn? And can they possibly burn white paper. Also I do have glasses from eagle pair for this wavelength but I was wondering if I can take off my glasses and look at the dot on carpet or a dark bed sheet or even lighter colored surfaces with out doing damage. I have a 650nm 250mw from sanwu and I can look at the focused dot just fine even in white without eye damage (or at least I think) so far I have no black spots in my eye. But I was wondering if the 200 or 300mw 405nm will do any damage while looking at the dot without glasses on. Thank you guys!

Both lasers will burn. They are single mode and are incredible burners per mW. You might struggle burning white paper however. You are unlikely to damage your eyesight by simply observing the dot, but both are still dangerous lasers to contend with. 405nm is also an odd wavelength. It appears dimmer than other wavelengths and your eyes struggle to focus properly on the dot. So it is important to remember the power of what you are dealing with.

Thank you for the quick response. So I shouldn't have a problem looking at the dot of either of them then?

You said : (or at least I think) so far I have no black spots in my eye.

Your test method needs some immediate reevaluation.

You can generally look at a beam, that is the relight scattering, but be aware that high power lasers over 5mw can be dangerous, so it's up you to do the math.

Just be careful, and you should be fine. Just use common sense, and make sure you wear your goggles for longer exposures. You can never be too careful, remember that it is still a class 3b. Enjoy your new 405nm when you get it.

Edit: I was also a bit wary about that bit RCB.

In general, if you are very close to the spot, if the surface material is too reflective, do not look at the dot. If the surface material is not very reflective it isn't as dangerous but it all depends upon how much power and how close you are to the dot when observing it. Why look at it close anyway?

I would be careful with these proposed uses of those
405nm Lasers focused to a point...

BTW... posting a tittle with "please answer ASAP"
as if it's an order that we must respond to sounds like
it's coming from some impatient kid....:undecided:
What's the big hurry ????

In my opinion 405nm single mode is one of the most dangerous laser pointers for the following reasons;

1. deceptive amount of power due to our eyes only be 1% as sensitive to that wavelength compare to green.

2. Single mode diode with very low divergence, can travel a long way without the beam spreading very much.

More dangerous than a Red Rider BB gun, be careful, you'll shoot your eye out.

Quite dangerous, kinda like IR but not as bad. These remain focused for very long distances because they are single mode. I have 250mw of 405 and I like it quite a bit, it will burn white paper when focused because the dot can be made so small.

If you feel you have any eye damage, please check your eyes with this immediately and/or see an eye specialist.

As Alaskan said, these are more dangerous than a bb gun because of perceived danger. The dim dot of a 405nm laser seems safe, but it is not.

Seriously though, always safety first!

Also, I forgot to mention that wavelength is very energetic, the shorter the wavelength the more so, and 405nm is almost UV which is destructive to cellular structures too from the wavelength alone. There are also dangers from intense blue light due to the bleaching it can do to the cones in the eye. Yes, IR is a bad one too, because you cannot see if you are getting it with a reflection and no blink response.

I have seen too many of these kinds of posts raising alarm regarding the dangers of lasers, sometimes I think it is someone yanking our chains, sometimes reports of getting hit in the eye, then a flurry of posts telling them to go so a doctor. A trolls heaven, but I'd rather error on the side of safety and respond them these posts than ignore them because I just don't know when someone is sincere or playing with us. I am well known for cautioning against these 405nm pointers, especially someone so young. Perhaps this is why the post, trying to pull me into this, I donno. Half the time I am also just seeing pink elephants, so I'm telling it as it is so you all have the whole story. The rest of the story is pink elephants exist :p

Thank you all for the good response, I will be very careful with this laser and I won't have prolonged exposure to the dot without my glasses on. The red laser isn't that bad after looking at the dot but it is still bright, I know this laser is also super bright but our eyes just don't register it very good. But I will be very careful I can promise you that, I don't want to go blind any time soon. :)

Sounds like a plan...:)

I wouldn't even wish that on a rat, mosquito's though, if you can get one to sit still long enough, zap em. I am also very careful with my lasers not to hit a bird or any animal with a beam anywhere, much less in the eye. Eye sight is one of the most wonderful things we have, man or animal.
