eBay lasers are fine for the cost. You can get a 5mW green for less than $10 shipped and they are usually always overspec a good bit. The Bluray pens are about the same price and I've also heard that they are similarly overspec.
Not to mention they can be used as a host. You can't even buy a host that cheap! I also have a theory that the green one could be modified to run red diodes off of the original driver, I plan on getting one and taking it apart to see eventually.

That was 55 pens, not 1 laser.
It is extremely uncommon for the hobbyist to have a problem, other than it usually takes almost 2 weeks to get to them. So the waiting is the hard part, really.
eBay lasers are junk and you might as well get something good that you can afford.

Uncommon, yes. But the poster I quoted said he had never heard of a package getting seized. Now he has. And this was not the first time either, several packages have been seized from users on this site. It is uncommon, but not unheard of.

Also, to anyone worried about illegal shipping into the US, NO ONE GIVING YOU ADVICE IS A LAWYER. The advice given here is not to be taken as legal advice, and it is up to you to know and follow all the proper laws as you see fit. I am also not a lawyer, so this i not legal advice. But please understand that what you are doing when ordering a laser that you know to be illegal to import into the US is akin to smuggling, and could be punished with fines or jail time. Most likely all that happens is confiscation, but remember the possible consequences for your illegal actions, and seek REAL legal advise when you feel it necessary.

Good point PBD! I also am NOT a lawyer and will take no responsibility whatsoever to any legal problems that arrise from following my advice:D
Chance of a customs problem are very slim for small orders, and its usually in the shipping, a normal package will be fine, but if it is from somewhere on the 'hot' list, then they might check better...
