So I decided to sign up with you guys purely out of settling a bet. Turns out, you are some of the smartest people on the web.

So, my buddy says he has used a green laser that looked like a flashlight to start camp fires. Now I have watched some videos on Youtube and seen wicked laser site, but popping balloons and lighting matches does not mean it can start a camp fire.

So, simply, is this possbile? I don't see how one of these things could be that strong.

Thanks.

Okay. Thank you. I believe some of you guys can build something that could do it, but I don't think he has EVER had access to something like that.

Today you can have 2W blue lasers for about $150, which can just barely light a candle. Also cardboard sometimes catches fire under it.
But it really depends what you are starting the fire with. Hide some matches in the firewood and you can start it even with 200mW green.

I lit my grill last weekend with my 445. I put just a few small sticks on the charcoals that were primed with lighter fluid :p

I've started camp fires plenty of times with my 100mw green pen (not instantaneously though) . I don't know what you guys are on about. It would take me 30 seconds or less to start one with a 2W blue.

It would pretty quick. maybe 5-9 seconds with my laser... I have a feeling mine is more power than I have proof... One day ill measure it.

I've started fires with my 445's and high power greens. With the 532's it depends on the type of paper and the color. Adding matches almost guarantees success!! 15W of CO2 works real good too ☺☺☺

Firework fuses or black powder is very easy to light with a 400mW ish laser of any wave length, I prefer 405 :D

So if you have 2000mW and a very steady hand you can light a fuse at 30-40+ feet away :eg:

He might have used it on a firestarter, but not on actual wood. The power required to IGNITE wood (not burn, mark) is really high... I can't imagine a green laser that strong :p

Seems like a major hassle to light a fire with a 532... not saying it's not doable, just a pain.

I have no problem seeing the dot of a 200mW+ green on a way a few feet away, but up close, no way... and who takes goggles with them camping?
