Default Is the nubm44 the best diode for burning?

Lately all my friends have been asking me which diode is the best choice for building a laser for burning? Several of them are considering constructing their own handhelds, including myself, and wanna know if their are any other diodes that compete with the nubm44 in terms of power? Has anyone tested diodes head to head to see which burns best? A couple of my buddies have an unlimited budget and are looking to build the most powerful pointer possible in terms of setting things on fire.

Have the co2 lasers reached the plateau of handheld and portable? I've seen several but none portable and small enough to fit in jeans pockets, which would be the standard for "portable", i guess.

Is their a company you can recommend that sells quality co2 lasers? Or perhaps a forum member?

No one size fits all, also distance matters and is it a pile of wet logs or a mcdonalds bag at your feet?

Sometimes spreading out your beam and pumping heat into the medium prior to exceeding flashpoint is needed or it goes out.

You need convergence but also total energy for certain things.

Humid double wall corrugated cardboard boxes will light and go out again and again, but thin wall cardboard will light once it's penetrated.

As far as the nubm44 the nubm06 is being tested and may edge it out as emitter size and efficiency might be slightly better, it's in testing but either needs beam correction if any distance is involved.

What works best is convergence of more power.

A 405 stays tight further, but it wont light a corrugated cardboard box at 25 feet or 10 feet or 5 feet if it's humid, there's not enough total energy, burn a tiny hole yes but it can't get enough total energy into the medium to sustain combustion.

Well focused multiple beams that are adjustable will cover the most situations the best, or 1 big sob that can be defocused for some jobs.

Cutting branches takes some power, and at distance focus and power.

It all takes more than you think, and small heat sinks get hot faster, duhh right, well a lot of people realize later they wanted more run time.

I like the nubm44, but I like the nubmo5t and numb06 price better.

It really depends on your purpose, more power is always good and you will often need more than you think, just burning a box at 30 meters takes a lot more than you might think.

RedCowboy, so you're saying if all the variables are the same, including duty cycles, the nubm06 will outperform the nubm44 in a burn test?

I'm not 100% sure on that yet, they both are strong and perform similar, I am waiting for LPM test, but the real factor is using the 05t/06 factory included lens and the cost of the nubm44 is much higher, over 200% as per my experience.

LPM results will be posted soon on my wtb nubm05t thread both with the factory lens and replaced with a G2 lens.

If we go by the fact they are both presently in production and generally these diodes keep getting more efficient, then we can glean something from the input power, they are similar, but I will wait for the LPM test to pass judgment.

The LPM test will tell who has the edge and how much it is, but the cost is a big factor for many people and we know how much that is.

I like the nubm44 a lot, I have had 3 and 2 are working well, however I am a math person so I analyze and quantify then look at extenuating factors.
