Like I said, there is a big difference between being a nubie and coming on here with your first post and asking for the "cheapest, most powerful laser I can get?"
I'm surprised you don't see that.

The main reason I bought the Arctic was because with all the negative publicity, I thought they might be forced to stop making them and it would be worth a lot of money. THAT'S what pushed me over the edge, because I knew it's so powerful, what can you really do with it?
After I knew there would be a long wait, I read and learned and have picked up a few lasers since.

I never came on here claiming to be a n0ob and wanting a "cheap, powerful laser so I could burn stuff."

Those are the idiots i'm talking about, not just anyone who's new to the forum. And if you don't think those guys are morons, then you have a lot more tolerance than most.

If I can remove my palm from my face long enough to type this... Uhh, here we go then...

No, you posted this when looking for your first laser -

I'm new to all this and would love to buy some lasers to get me started! Not looking for anything specific, just let me know what you have.

I figure there must be some forum members in the LA area with some old
lasers burning a hole in their pocket (ba doom - pshhhh), so I'd be happy to swing by and see what you've got.

PM me or just reply here...

Seems like you said you were new, and were looking for any laser but hoped you'd get a pick of the cheapest, most powerful ones you could get your hands on to me?

Convenient memory too -

In the link directly above you claim it was a different drive that, "pushed you over the edge"...

Go ahead and laugh, but I did order an arctic back in July, just as I was just starting out to learn about lasers. I've always thought they were cool (just par for the course when you're a sic fi nerd I guess) and all the "light saber" hub bub pushed it over the edge for me.

... SNIP

More making stuff up to win an argument? Or is the truth in this thread and the convenient false comment in the other? Doesn't look good either way I'm afraid.

In the OPs post, I don't see that they say, "I'm looking for the cheapest, most powerful laser so I can burn stuff". I see them asking for a very visible, thicker beam not more than $200. There is a question at the bottom regarding the 1W blue but it's a question, not a specification or, 'must have'. Please read it again. I have posted it below so you don't have to go far.

Hi all, im pretty new to the laser community, I purchased a 5mw 532nm laser from ebay and I think im hooked now. Ive been doing a lot of research but still cant find a laser to buy. I bought a cheap 30mw 532nm laser from ebay and im not satisfied at all. Ive been looking at some of the lasers from rayfoss.com because of their prices. I am not looking to spend more than $200. I want a laser with a very visible beam that is on the thicker side. Just something that looks very cool. I was thinking about ordering the 1w blue laser from rayfoss because of how thick the beam looked. It is also focusable which means I can burn many things, right?

Some of the things you have said, in just the threads you have started, since you joined have shown me you should be lumped in with the idiots and morons category. I urge you to go and re-read some of those too. Here's another link -

http://laserpointerforums.com/search.php?searchid=448688

For reference, anyone else can go visit this cornucopia of n00b idiocy just for kicks. Really, some of it is quite funny. It doesn't show the posts in other people's threads but I'm sure they are much of a muchness.

Let this one go n00bie. It will serve you no purpose to continue.

Wow, one glace at your post Morgan and I know what to expect even without reading it - you really are "one of those guys" who has to win forum arguments. Amazing how much time and energy you put into that... I will not deny you the ultimate thrill for a forum nerd:

You win! i'm a noob!

Now go celebrate your, um... victory.

@zo6daniel personally it took me half year and a lot of research to feel im ready and have interest enough to go for something >5mW, even so and unfortunately for me i just killed 2 lasers in less a week but in the other hand im glad dead ones are the lasers and not one or both of my eyes.

There are tons of options, not only lasers but prices, sites/shops, manufacturers and even the option u build ur own, that way u will learn a LOT more, so just take ur time to find the info u need, that way u will narrow the options and most probably at the end you will know what exactly u looking for and would be easier for you to decide your next laser.

I think the main thing people really need to ask themselves is "why do I NEED a powerful laser?"

If we're all honest with ourselves, the only reason we really have a burning laser is to show off to friends and watch them go "holy crap that's insane!"

But after you've done that, you're pretty much done. Bragging rights only last so long.

It's cool to look at the beam shining in the sky, that's something I personally like - but these days, even if i'm careful to make sure there are no aircraft around, i'm very self conscious about letting the beam lose - you never know when someone might become irrational, or a cop might come after you.

Of course, that's the real question about this hobby - what use are these things, other than being cool? For most, there probably is no other answer. Personally, my #1 use is for my own personal laser show at home - I like creating patterns and "painting" with laser light - there's nothing else like it.

But even that doesn't require massively powerful lasers. Believe it or not, a 5mw green is the perfect brightness for a lumia wheel!

Anyway, the point is, nubies should spend a few minutes considering WHY they want a 500mw laser and ask themselves if the cost and risk justifies having something cool to show off to friends for a few minutes.
