Default Noob enthusiast requests enlightenment...

Hello fellow beamers. I have been modifying laser gunsights to make them more effective for daytime use. Bought a couple of green modules with the spring and no wires, which worked great to replace the weak modules in the gunsight hosts. All I had to do was bridge the switch with a bit of wire.

Ordered a red 150mw and it came with switch, wires, and spring. Seemed obvious that all I had to do was cut the wires off, bridge switch and install into host same as green ones. Nope.

The module will light in the host if I tie the black wire to the spring and reverse the battery. Will also light outside of host with black wire and - end of battery on spring with red wire touched to + end of battery. Will not light if I connect battery - to spring and jumper from + end to module case as with the greens.

What is the difference between the red and green modules and what is the simplest way to install it without having to reverse the battery in the host?

Thanks.

Ps. I searched the forum for similar issues but didn't find a specific answer.

Green modules are almost always "case positive" polarity, which means battery negative goes to driver's spring, battery positive goes to brass case of the module.

That's just the way it is, that's how the 808nm IR pump diode inside the module is manufactured, no way around that.

In contrast, blue and red diodes are case negative.

Reversing the battery in the host is a very simple solution anyway, why do you wish to change it? What do you imagine your final result is like?

Some lasers are case positive. Just unsolder the wires, and solder them the other way. Not really much going on there. Also,be careful, you can damage the laser by reversing its polarity.

Thanks. You both had the same answer, one with a bit more detail. Reversed case polarity on red vs green. However, I would rather have the spring contacting the flat battery negative side as with the green modules. I have had no recoil damage to those yet. For the red I may have to rig something for the positive end on the battery to rest on instead of just the spring. My hosts are built with a remote pressure switch tailcap that is designed for the positive side out and no easy way to attach a spring, hence my wanting to keep battery polarity the same.

hey infoman9, just registered to research my want of a green laser powerful enough to see the dot on a squirrel at 30 to 40yds or less in the Daytime and mount on my air pistol. my air pistol has virtually no recoil.
Could you help me out please, BTW, I can solder.
thanks

Welcome to the forums JWJSR
I would suggest something over 80mW. A 100mW greenie will do the job. They can be expensive, depends on quality. They are also dangerous,so be careful. Cheap ones dont have IR filtering,so they can damage your eyes. You should always have a pair of protection goggles. Blue ones are a lot cheaper and more powerful. Maybe getting a blue laser wouldn't hurt

I have no idea
30-40yds is quite far. Better question would be...can you see a dot that far?
I think someone else should answer this question, cause i have no idea.
Also, shooting squirrels ? Not cool bro.

They are so cute man
Just saying i wouldn't shoot them. You can do what ever you like.
Those modules are great. If this would be your first laser, you are on the right path.
I sill still recommend protection glasses. One bad move is all it takes to damage your eyes.

i guess its my fault new they were getting into the attic but didn't realize they were eating my wiring.
I would really like some of the stainless hosts i've come across on the forum tonight that i could just drop that module in like you can with the 501b kit from Mrcrouse. Can you tell more about the daylight visibility of the blue vs the green?

Eyes are more sensitive to green light,so i would say green is more visible.
You should make a new thread. Now you know a bit more, but if you still have questions, make a thread.

Definitely go green for visibility.

532nm Green Laser Beam Gun Sniper Electro 5mW 2 Mount Mounts Sight Remote Switch | eBay

I bought a couple of these. Out of the box at least 30mw. A quick tweak to the pot and you can get at least 80mw I have one over 100mw. For a gun sight that will only be activated for seconds at a time the heat will be no problem.
