The only way this will get stickied is if c0ld sees this, I don't think he has!

I did, I got no reply from him.

And yeah, I'm bumping this because there have been a lot of threads that might have been able to be solved with this thread. Here are a few:

Hey guys im new to this forum. I have always loved playing with those cheap $2 lasers in school or whereever. But they broke after a week or two and the distance of the light was horrible. I havent played with one for over 3 years and somebody in my history class had one and now i want one.
I am looking for a good laser that can have good distance and light matches. The second laser recommended in this thread looks great but the problem is im from the damn US. So how am i supposed to get a good laser and where if they only let me buy <5 mw from most sites.

Thanx, this site is great and has loads of information. :)

This thread really has great info for n00bs. =) I do however have a question for the gurus here. How do I know a laser has an IR filter before buying? I'm currently in Singapore and there are a few places that you can pick up greenies off the shelf but I'm more concerned about the filter rather than the confirmed output. Any help in this area would be much appreciated.

DealExtreme no longer ships >5mW lasers to the US, guide should be updated to reflect this.

VERY nice guide.

there's nothing said about dealextreme.com

newbies (and some not so newbies) will eventually get to dealextreme....i myself bought my laser there

I have heard of this website, but there were a few complaints here in the U.S. about customs seizing lasers. Do those reports hold any merit?

Also, what is quality of these lasers? ( I'm just starting out so top of the line products aren't necessary as long as they still have safety features.)

Thanks for the info!

This guide is VERY outdated, I wrote this over two years ago. That was back when 5mW violet builds were becoming popular. :D It would probably be best for this thread to fall back in the archives and RIP.

I just found this site a couple of days ago and I just registered a few hours ago so my perspective is fresh...
This thread is still helpful and informative. Perhaps a quick edit adding a note pointing out the elapsed timeframe for those not bothering to look at the dates of the postings.
Everyone should ALWAYS look at when the comments were made.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to read about 40 hours more of these things before I think I will be qualified to ask a question.
