It is certainly POSSIBLE to solder the diode straight to the battery wires, but your diode would be burned out in a very short time (maybe seconds).

The driver is there to control the current and protect the driver from "spikes" and general over powering the diode.

The driver is necessary.

Do a lot of reading and searching on this board. You do need a driver, it is a very important critical part of a real laser. The "Kipkay" mod on youtube does not guarantee that the diode will live long. This video only shows that a laser can be made in a flashlight.

You can buy a rckstar or drlava driver from this board. Or, you could make an LM317 driver for your DVD diode. Driver you need depends on what diode you have. (16x, 20x, 22x) Welcome, and good luck with your build. Lots of info here on red laser builds.
