Ok, I own an X-125, and I thought I was having a problem but nova tells me my laser is fine. I've owned it for about a month and one day I noticed that it wasn't projecting just a dot anymore but more of a circle and a big one at that. Now I know theres always some scatter from partials in the air and when a high power laser hits a wall can illuminate most of a room, but it really looked like the laser had a green led shining behind it. the circle was consistent in shape and the laser dot was just off center, if I rotated the laser the bright green circle would visible rotate also. The circle shrank and grew depending on how far the laser was from the surface I was shining it at. I also began have problems popping balloons, when I first got it it would pop a black balloon at eight feet in about a second, now now it wont do anything at eight feet and it takes about ten seconds at six feet. I tried cleaning my lens and plenty of different batteries. Anyone have any thoughts on the situation?

I have found it very difficult (and dangerous) cleaning lenses, especially those in a pen style where it's hard to access. Sometimes there is a protective film, (correct me if I'm wrong, but acrylic ones only) where I've heard rubbing alcohol or Windex will destroy the lens. You might have killed your lens.

Did you drop it? Very fragile alignment of collimators and crystals can get thrown out of focus.

Moister? Was it exposed to high humidity, mist, steam etc.?

You might need to send it in for warrantee and/or repair. These are probably worst case scenarios. Have you noticed this change with good Li batteries? And temperature? Green lasers are temperature sensitive and perform differently.

Good luck, let us know how it goes. ;)

You've all been quite helpful, thank you. To ace82, whats bothering me is that it is out on warranty repair, and there telling me so far they cant find anything wrong with it. I'm hoping at this point that the was something really gunking up the lens that I couldn't get off and the cleaned up before testing it. I have never dropped it, and I'm really careful about any kind of shocks it might absorb, I try and treat it like a glass test tube with a lead ball in it...

not to sound stupid but you should of dropped it before you sent it and blamed it on the postal service you used. can i smell a replacement laser? ;D

This guy! [smiley=evil.gif] My evil twin would have gave it 9volts to blow it's internal circuitry so that their wouldn't be a visible mark on the outside. But since I'm good (not evil), I wouldn't dare do such a thing. [smiley=evil.gif]

I'm pretty sure lasers work via black magic and I'm too afraid of angering the black wizards that work on them to do anything like that.

Why not post a picture of the dot? It may be hard, since the light is so bright, but with experimenting it can be done. If you post a pic we can all get clearer images of what s happening.

Sounds like its just dirty optics to me... I think if the lens was whacked out of place it wouldn't have the point that he describes at all... it would be just a big green ball. Unless I read it wrong, are you saying that it still has the dot but there is a big circle of 'noise' around it? I know you said the circle gets larger and smaller as you move, but what about the dot in the middle?

Also, if it were out of focus, at some point the beam would converge into a small dot. I guess if the lens was just slightly misaligned it could give the symptoms you describe, but I think it would be a much more dramatic change.

Sounds just like speckle to me, a small amount of speckle is compltely normal, and would be found in almost all DPSS lasers.
