Nice, Bob. But, I don't quite get your "Home made lasers". What does green 100/50mW mean? And red 600/150mW? If they are both powers in mW then they likely aren't the same wavelength. Just curious.

Sorry, but when I build lasers I like to build them dual power. The Green in low power mode is 50mW, but in full power mode is 100mW. I use low power to focus the laser and set it up. Full Power is for popping balloons and lighting matches... All my lasers are what I like to call bench top lasers. That is they sit in a bench top and are not the handheld kind.

The Red is 638nm.
The green is 520nm.
The blue is 450nm.

Thanks, Bob. That makes more sense now. You likely have these in lab hosts with a fan on the back. Just a guess on my part, but it would make sense.

Oddly enough, I didn't put any fans on the lasers, just large heat sinks. Maybe for my 1.8W Blue laser I should put a fin, but tests show that I can run for about 5 minutes before it gets too hot. The red seems to run OK without a fan and I'm testing the cheaper heat sinks to see which does the best. If I go for more power than 1.8W a fan is going to be a requirement.

You can get the 40 mm fans in +12 VDC or +5 VDC for very little money. I stock both as they are useful even if you think the lab host doesn't get hot enough. The fan will carry off a lot of the heat, keeping the diode nice and cool. For the money, I see no reason to not use one every time.

Can't help but chuckle at the irony. After years of joking about being "probably on a list for...", here I am putting myself onto one willingly.
Cheers!

I , too was curious.... but asking got this thread way off -topic.
I might have asked via PM (IF there is such a thing now_)
I live in Brazoria--once the capital of Texas for a while.
