When I was in the dj business I came across the lighting company Martin. And while searching through their product line I came across this fancy thing: Product - RGB Laser 1.6™ I'm just curious to know how they would pull something like this off... anybody have any ideas?

That's a RGB full-color scanner. Check out this site: Home Page - www.LaserFX.com.. specifically this part. Then read the new to scanners sticky in the laser shows section. That will give you an idea of how that's pulled off. It's a little long-winded, but you'll pick up some search terms along the way.. Google them and you'll really begin to understand.

Martin is high end stuff, you can build a similar laser projector for a fair bit cheaper than they retail it for. Photonlexicon is a good place to read up on scanners, as are the links posted by EF above.

No, you can't really build a similar unit for much less, you can build a projector for a lot less, but it will not do that level of performance.

Depending on how much that martin costs you could.. A 1.6W full-color scanning projector with all the high-end trimmings could be built for $5000-6000, and I'm sure that Martin costs substantially more than that. Of course it depends on what brand of lasers Martin uses, but I would imagine they are either high-end Chinese or standard European modules. Only a guess, though.
