Are those laws just for NSW or for all of Australia?

If they are for all Australia, I will try for a permit. I just hope it doesn't backfire and I lose 2grand of lasers...

Just don't let them know how many lasers you have when applying. Unless they want to register the individual lasers I don't see how it can go wrong.

Also you can try putting <1mw stickers on all of your lasers and they won't be able to take them unless the cops have laserchecks to test the lasers.

The ban is FULL of exploits and loopholes that can be taken advantage of.

You can clasify an RPL with an apperture shutter as a class 1 laser because , though it has a laser inside, the actual device doesn't emit any radiation with the apperture closed.

* Police may now search a premises or person for said lasers.
* Anyone CARRYING a laser pointer in a public place may be fined.
* Anyone USING a laser in a public place may be fined and imprisoned.
* Police now have the ability to frisk those suspected of carrying a laser.
* Class 3 & 4 Handheld Lasers will be restricted from import.
* The laws apply to handheld lasers, regardless of the ouput of the laser.
* If you own a laser pointer under 1mW, you may use it as needed.
* People who wish to use stronger handheld lasers in their work, HOBBY or business may apply for an exemption.
* If you are stopped and found to be carrying a laser, you must show that you were traveling to or from your place of work/HOBBY/business to/from your home at the time or you may be subject to a fine.

The highlighted bit suggests exemptions for people who collect lasers as a hobby.

Second thing :

In the last 12 months, there have been seven reported instances of lasers being used to target aircraft in the ACT alone. ( only 7 "attacks" )

Diachi

Only 7 attacks? Its as if you feel thats insignificant...what do you think led us here =/

Murudai, not a personal attack or anything, but you already managed to get yourself onto a newspaper...the kind of reply's you are making i wouldn't be surprised if the police grabbed your IP and came knocking at your door with a search warrant on the 1st of July :

You would have to be extremely naive to think that this site is not being watched. If you think that I'm taking this issue too seriously and that know one will get searched...just think about how fast this issue has developed, 4 months ago i wouldn't have ever imagined this happening.
Remember you wont be selling any lasers if you are behind bars =P

My opinion is this guy should have lost his job for writingsuch a one sides article. Basically summed up that article says all laser enthusiasts buy high powered lasers especially to point at aircraft.

I bought my first laser because of an interest in them for a number of years and a few laser shows I have seen. That laser is now used for star pointing and even helping my dad in the garden so I can point things out or check they are level.

You got to understand that with the media releasing information is only 50% of the job, the other half is dramatizing it and getting more readers so the betting section can get a few new players (purely speculation of course =] )

What would you rather see "Laser HOONS SHOOT DOWN 747 with RPL 6000" or "Laser Enthusiast misusing DIY Blu Ray laser" ...i know i'd be interested in reading about RPL 6000's that don't exist.

Its nothing personal towards us, they are just doing their job...its not helping our cause however!

I'm still unclear on whether these new laws are for NSW or all Australia, since I read somewhere that it was just NSW.

But I will definitely get a permit for my lasers before July 1st if when I call the police I find out it is needed. So don't worry about me

And as for my IP. I use wireless internet from my university. Pretty tricky to trace wireless. But I'm sure they can do it, which is why like I said I will be looking in to getting a permit.

Actually its pretty easy to trace that, ok not easy to trace your location but they can trace it back to the wireless hub you are using with no problems.

So the laws to ban lasers will come in before you can even get a permit for them?

That doesn't make any sense, they could bust every laser user in the entire country then, even those who were getting a permit.

Right. I was going to call the police today but I had too many things to do, so I'll call them tomorrow about this.

I sure hope you can get a permit, if you do then tell us, so the other people from AU can also apply for one.

If you dont tell us anyway. tell us what the police said.

Nah, I live in the ACT.

That's why I made all those posts wondering if all these laws that were said in the NSW will apply country wide.

yea, i don't even see how people have already done that. Shining a laser onto an object moving around 200+ miles per hour is not an easy task. That would be comparable to throwing a baseball at a car going 60.

Default Re: Looks like someone in AU is onto WL!

Geez, laze_doctor. We're trying NOT to get the feds on to us.

And it wouldn't be easy. Have you tried pointing a laser pointer at the wall? No matter how steady you are, it will shake. Now translate that into 200-400m distance. The shake would be more like 10m. And you're trying to hit the windshield of a tiny cockpit. You'd never be able to fix on it for more than a few flashes every second.

And again, seriously. Don't post things like 'oh, it's easy' because that's just too suss. Especially since it ISN'T easy.
