Looking for visible and IR diodes / modules

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm still kind of new here:thinking:

I'm having a hard time tracking down some laser components.

What I need is a green laser module in the 30mw range, ideally with an IR filter.
Or a red module or diode in the same 30mw range.

I also need an IR diode or module 830-850nm in the 30mw range

If I end up getting the individual diodes (not really an option for green) I'll also need a source for their appropriate lenses to focus them into a beam.

I'm planning on building custom housings and driver boards so I don't need those.

I'm trying to track down these components, hopefully from the same site, but if anyone has a recommended place for any of them I would greatly appreciate the help.

DX, o-like, and rayfoss all have green modules. You may need to stick on your own IR filter. These small green modules are not usually IR filtered. You might need to look through ebay for a 5.6mm IR can diode, put it in an aixiz module with acrylic uncoated lens that has the back opened and make your own DDL or similar driver.

Check ebay for IR filters. I found this right off the bat IR Filter absorbing 808nm and 1064nm. $3 +$2 us shipping. Specs: Material: BG39 Dimension:4.0x4.0x0.1mm
T>95%@532nm & T<0.2%@808nm & T<0.2%@1064nm S1, S2 AR@532nm R<0.1% Seller:snoctony

Try this search (BG38,"bg-38",bg39,"bg-39",kg2,"KG-2") (filter,optical,optic,Absorption,808nm,532nm,1064nm) Clicking "Include title and description" will catch more but include many non-related.

Optotronics $1 25mm square IR blocking filter Absorbs ~85% IR. But they are out of stock at the moment. BG-38 is a better filter if you can find some. (Anyone got a link to buy BG-38?)

The optotronics filters are KG-2 or equivalent. Here is the transmission datasheet: Schott KG2 Glass Transmission Filter Data | Optical-Filters.com
You can see that the cutoff curve is not as steep as for BG-38 (the preferred IR filter material) as you can see here: Schott BG 38 transmission data sheet | BG38 Optical-Filters.com
If you compare the two graphs, you'll see that the KG-2 allows a bit more light through at 808 and 1064nm than the BG-38. The steeper curve means better filtration.

OK, thanks, that's very helpful.

I looked at the charts for BG38 and 39, and it looks like BG39 would be the most ideal? It looks like it peaks at around 500nm and most of the other wavelengths are filtered out with a pretty steep curve. In that case, I'll probably end up getting a few of those listed on ebay, unless someone has an online storefront for them.

It looks like O-like is a good place to get the green laser modules. They have a nice 50mw one. It is a little more powerful that what I need, but I guess running it at a lower power level wouldn't hurt anything.

I also found a possible source for the IR diodes. http://www.us-lasers.com/irlasdio.htm. They seem to be pricey little guys, is this a reasonable price? I'm looking for the ones in the 830-860nm 30mw range. Has anyone ever dealt with us-lasers? They also offer focusing lenses.

To me there isn't really an "ideal" between BG38 & BG39, 39 blocks more IR but also transmits a little less green. Personally I prefer 38 but I don't know a good source for BG38 anyway. Even better to me would be BG40.
..... Its really just splitting hairs tho, BG39 is great.

What are you planing to use the IR for? Will you be adding a FAC lens?
Not sure what the price for 830-860nm Should Be but they do seem expensive, even their 808nm is about the same price.
~EDIT~ google found thorlabs.com $80-90 for 830-850nm @ 30mW single mode. I bet even better prices are out there.
I hope you post pictures of your builds.

OK, I see your point. I'll just get whatever I can lay my hands on:D

I think I found a good place to source the laser diodes from, ThorLabs They have a nice, online store, a wide selection, AND better prices!

What would you recommend for a culminating lens? Would uncoated glass or plastic be good?

My build would probably be kind of boring to you guys, compared to some of the sweet lasers you are making. I am making myself an aiming device for my rifle. My goal is a device similar to the PEQ-15/PEQ15A. It will consist of two lasers, visible and IR run parallel to each other that can have their aim adjusted. They will be powered by a single CR123 battery (3v). I may also put on an IR illumination. The mechanical parts will be easy as I'm a machinist by trade. And I know a guy that can do the boards.

The real thing is darn near impossible for a civilian to get their hands on (although legal to own) and prices range from $1300 (dealer price) to $5000 (Ebay price) I think I can beat that...:D

IR diodes usually need a FAC (fast axis correction) lens (some diodes have a FAC built in) to focus them into a beam. If it has a FAC it would probably say upfront. Otherwise the divergence (beam spread) will tell you if it has a FAC.
For the 850 nm, 30 mW the specs list:
Characteristic ________________________MIN_TYP_MAX __UNIT
Beam Divergence (FWHM) - Parallel ______ 7 __ 8.5 _ 12 ___deg.
Beam Divergence (FWHM) - Perpendicular __23 _30 __ 35 __deg.
If it had a FAC the Parallel & Perpendicular Divergence would be the same.
Both the 850nm & 830nm don't seem to have FAC lens. It can be a pain to find the right FAC so I would try to find a diode with it built in.
Maybe post in Blue, Yellow, & Other Colored Lasers asking for sources of IR diodes with FAC. I'm sure others would have more information then me as well. I believe uncoated glass or plastic is ok for IR but ask over there to be sure.

Did you pick 830-860nm to be invisible? I know 808nm can be visible & 980nm shouldn't be but I'm not sure about 830-860. I'm interested tho. Do you know if they are 100% invisible at 830-860?

The recoil will be harsh on your lasers. I know greens can be killed & you would need one built for firearms. With precautions perhaps red & IR can take it. I don't know really. I might try a cheap test laser with its driver & everything encased in epoxy. At least few members here have a variety of firearms.

I don't think your build would be boring by the way & just the custom machined parts would be fun by them self.

OK, I'll ask over there.

The IR laser should be invisible to the eye, but it will be picked up by the NVD.

I'm not too worried about recoil. It will be primarily mounted on an AR carbine for night time drills. I've also taken apart a green weapon laser, and it was just an off the shelf green laser module stuffed in an assembly that would facilitate adjusting the point of aim with setscrews... Although I'm not sure if that would have held up either. I'll make sure to build it well.
