little green/grey box under rep points?

What is the green/grey box under the rep points? My happens to be grey. I have zero rep. I have noticed some other people with zero rep have a green one. And since I have this thread, can some body tell me how to put the smilies in the text box? when ever I choose one, it always gets attached to the side of the thread title.

If it goes green you will come up as "chipdouglas is an unknown quantity at this point."... mine is green.... It is nice after all this time to still be an unknown quantity....I have no idea how or why it changes as mine was grey yesterday.

i believe it has to do with the time you spend on the forum.

either that or how many posts you have.

but since it just switched it will only count what you have posted on the vbulletin (sp?) one.

I'm not exactly sure about post count, just how dedicated/helpful to the forums maybe, I'm not completely sure.

If you have some negative points it will change the color. Say you had 4+ it will be green, you loose 4 it turns grey, loose more and its red. I think that's the way it works. You should be able to see how many points you have, and who left comments and what the comments were in your User CP page. The problem is you are the only one that can see it.
