Lasers - Care and Storage

I own a few portable hand held lasers (laser pointers) ranging in power from < 5mW to < 200mW.
When they are not in use I generally take out the batteries and store them in a soft padded case. If I am going to keep one stored for a long time I will occasionally take it out of the case and fire it up for a minute or so rather than let it sit unused indefinitely. But I always store them in a soft padded case to avoid the bad experience I had one time in which I dropped a DPSS green laser and wound up knocking things way out of alignment.

If I am going somewhere and I decide to take a laser with me (although most often I leave the at home) I generally wrap it in a plastic envelope or, at the very least cover the output end of the laser to keep dust and particles, water, etc. off of the lens. All too often I have put laser pointers in my pocket only to turn them on later and find the lens speckled with dust and in need of a cleaning.

Any other ideas or recommendations with regards to storing lasers from prolonged periods, i.e protecting them from excessive heat, cold, humidity, etc.

Tomorrow I am going to get my self one of these.



They are water resistant, shock proof and have strong secure locks on them.

I will be using it when i transport my laser around with me and just for general safety (don't like leaving lasers around where others can see it/use them). At the moment my lasers are stored in a padded draw which I need for storing other stuff.... so I'm gonna buy myself this case tomorrow.

Looks like a nice case. i can probably track it down online. I could use a couple of them cases. For lasers and other delicate stuff.

They are not cheap

At my work I can get them for ~$60 AUD. They are called pelican cases (our cases we sell are just called safety cases, but look exactly the same)

Check ebay and amazon for pelican cases, there should be some there.

I use a pelican case for some of my lasers, which you can see as my avatar.

Cheaperthandirt has some great inexpensive cases. I use this Armortek one for guns, but it would work for lasers just as well. Check out their hard cases.

This one is from Ziegel Engineering, which makes some great aluminum cases. Very rugged, and very light weight.

I like the Pelican case because it can be configured to carry my goggles that fit over my glasses (silver bag on upper left), plus an additional set of protective eyeware (under the foam that holds the laser) plus extra batteries, cleaning kit, all stashed in plucked out foam spaces. It's waterproof, and will even adjust for pressure changes with the valve on the case.
