LASER Safety Alert: Do not shine any LASER's at airplane, helicopters or anything else!

From The Boston Globe;
Man charged with shining laser at helicopter
Aircraft forced to take evasive action

By Matt Collette, Globe Correspondent | June 19, 2008

A Medford man was charged yesterday with shining a powerful green laser beam into a State Police helicopter escorting an LNG tanker through Boston Harbor in December, US Attorney Michael J. Sullivan announced yesterday.

Gerard Sasso, 49, of Medford, was arrested yesterday on charges that he interfered with the operation of an aircraft with reckless disregard for the safety of human life and that he made false statements.

Sasso will return to court in 20 days for a probable cause hearing, when he will enter a plea, said William D. Weinreb, the assistant US attorney prosecuting the case.

The crew of the helicopter flying on the night of Dec. 8, 2007, identified Sasso's third-floor studio apartment as the source of the beam, and neighbors corroborated that location with police, the complaint said. The pilots were forced to take evasive action.

Sasso denied to Medford police and State Police, who had gone to his apartment that evening, that he had shined the laser at the helicopter, said Christina DiIorio-Sterling, a spokeswoman for the US attorney.

But after police questioned him about a window overlooking the LNG facility being open despite the cold and a red laser device on his nightstand, Sasso apologized for shining the light and removed the green laser device from under a floorboard. Police found 10 laser devices in Sasso's apartment.

The laser Sasso is accused of using was classified by the Food and Drug Administration as a Class IIIb laser, which can cause burns, temporary blindness, and distractions, prosecutors said.

The charge of interfering with the operation of an aircraft carries a maximum 20-year imprisonment, five years supervised release, and a $250,000 fine; the charge of making false statements carries a maximum of five years imprisonment, three years supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

i supposed if you shine it at space then there is technically nothing that you are shining it at .. but if something happens to get in the way like a airplane, or a helicopter, or say a person, the earth, the sky.

then you were technically shining it at nothing but something was interfering

<claps> Ooooo -- semantics. One of my favorite games

Intention is not part of the statement. Whether you intended to shine it at something or not, it is definitely shining at "something" -- Even if that "something" is just oxygen molecules. While on the face of this earth, it is impossible to shine your laser at "nothing" because you are completely surrounded by "things". So it is equally impossible to not shine your laser at "anything else."

Also, "space" is NOT "nothing."

Peace,
dave

If they had to run from him, I'd bet it was intentional. I'm always impressed by how many of these perpetrators are caught although I suppose the ones that weren't caught wouldn't make the news.

I feel some deep philosophical discussion coming up...

Really though, who really knows what space really is (I used really thrice intentionally!)?

Obviously some scientists are pretty sure, but there is no definite answer.

There are things in "space", it's not just "nothing". There are gas particles, there is radiation. Space actually has a "pressure" (of course, is it still called pressure if there's nothing for the gas particles to be impinging upon?). But deep space does have gas (there isn't much, granted, but it's there), it does have temperature, you could even through dark matter in there as being a component of outer space, I reckon.

No deep philosophical discussion. Just a pragmatic, empirical fact. Space is NOT a "void." Whoever told you that, is either 30 years behind in research or is only telling you what their teachers told them (30 years ago). Space is filled with a multitude of particles. The particles are most certainly more dispersed than in our atmosphere, but space is full of "stuff." Have you ever seen a meteor storm?

Empiricism aside, the universe is too full of stuff for a laser NOT to be pointing at "something." I would posit that even just considering things we CAN see, you would be very hard pressed to avoid pointing at "something." Once you include "dark matter" and lighted things beyond our ability to see, you have moved the possibility of pointing at "nothing" out of the realm of reality.

We DO know what space is. We've both been there AND we can look very far into the past. We do not know everything, but there are many, many, many (I used "many" thrice intentionally) definite answers about the nature of "space." It is NOT an unknown.

Peace,
dave

Well, to veer this thread back into the philosophical realm, the universe is of an unknown size... for all we know there's infinite stars in any direction going on continuously forever... We just can't know, since anything that's 670million miles times the age of the universe away from us we simply cannot see, since the photons haven't had enough time to reach us... furthermore, with the expansion of the universe, some photons will never reach earth and we will *never* be able to see or detect the furthest galaxies... Other theories postulate that the universe is spherical and if you go far enough in any direction you'll end up back where you started, so in either case, pointing your laser into "nothing", even if space were a vacuum, you'd still end up pointing it at *something*.
