I watched the news tonight, and have also seen green lasers pointing at the camera or the camera crew. It might be understandable(not saying I agree to) why they are pointing at the heli, but the news crew?

For whatever righteous cause they think it will serve, imagine those crew might have to stand there for hours and kept being shone on...not cool. :twak:

Well if they think it's form of a celebration, why not shine at everyone's faces ? At least we know what will happen if masses gets lasers ..

Oh we're on TV! :D wohoo lol

Green lasers are everywhere now :( I remember when I had it a year or two ago, I was one of the "elite" back then lol. The lasers used in the demonstrations are cheap ones. They were for 100EGP (10~15USD).

I'm not sure of their danger or anything, but most say "Wavelength 532mm" "Max output <5mW" "Class IIIA Laser Product". Some I saw had the same info but "Max output <1000mW".

People used them a lot in football matches to point at the goalkeepers and at the cameras and now to celebrate the ousting of the president and the army helicopters as you have seen. There was too much laser on one helicopter that I actually thought it was self-illuminating :D).

Over there they have a comedy show whereby they scare the crap out of celebrities by making them think that the coach they are on is hijacked by terrorist and make them think they are going to die !!!!

We hated that show >.> He was really an a** (sorry, couldn't find a better word). He made a show before where the celebrity would go up in an elevator and get stuck on a specific floor, with a lion in front of the elevator doors (tied of course, but still)..

What was done in the show sounds like a really bad idea. It could have resulted in tragic consequences if someone was armed and mistook the prank for a real robbery.

Back on topic, I have mixed feelings about this whole thing with regards to lasers. While it's great to see so many fellow "laserists" out there, pointing lasers at helicopters certainly isn't something we encourage, and it could lead to more anti-laser legislation once things have calmed down.

I also still can't help but wonder if any LPF members were involved. On one hand, the vast majority of us won't shine a laser at aircraft no matter the circumstances. But then again, a high-end laser scanner isn't something the average citizen would have.

I suspect some of the protestors may purchased their lasers from LPF members, or are at least aware of this forum. Speaking of which, has any DIY'ers shipped any lasers to Egypt recently?

No problem. :)

All the people on the bus knew of the prank, except the celebrity of course. But yeah it could have ended really bad for some of them. I hope he doesn't do anything like that this year (he does it every Ramadan).

Regarding the lasers on the helicopters, I don't think anyone knows of the dangers/illegalities of it. I highly doubt many know of LPF (if any).. Maybe the guy with the blue laser, but that's it :D

if we give egypt anything remotely as good as our military pilots used 20 years ago green lasers won't phase them.

considering we give them f16s I think its a strong possibility.

In reality, if all laser pointers are banned tomorrow but because of that Egyptian children grow up to enjoy the freedom from oppression we do in the west then it's an insignificant price to pay.

I can rock up to 10 Downing Street in London and call the PrimeMinister an "asshat" to his face without fear of being hauled away in the night because I have the freedom to do so, when in truth that ability isn't and wasn't free, so many gave so much, some gave everything for me to have that right.

It's all about priorities really.

best wishes

Dave
