Hey guys,

Just wondering what precautions you guys take to avoid electro static discharge when using laser modules.

Not talking about when soldering diodes etc... but for regular everyday use. Is ESD an issue... or are most built to handle it?

Surely you can't be expected to periodically ground yourself... so I'm guessing it's not an issue? Is anybody paranoid enough to store their modules in ESD bags?

Cheers :)

EDIT - 300th post!

The paperwork that came with my RPL does state that the diode is sensitive to static electricity, and to always store it in the anti-static bag it came in. Also, to be careful when changing batteries and to discharge yourself before handling it.

I imagine that if it's one of those days when it's very dry and you get a *zap* whenever you reach for something, it may be an issue for your laser.

I emailed LG about this, and looks like it's all good. Here's what they had to say:

I’ve never seen a laser damaged by static discharge to the body. It’s a big problem if the laser is opened up and the diode is exposed, but as long as you don’t disassemble it an everyday static shock will not be a problem.

(Justin, I'm assuming it was fine for me to quote you. If not just drop me a PM. Cheers!)

hi,I agreen with LG
When we make the lasers, especially for the Diodes,we use the Electrostatic Ring to avoid electro static discharge.but for laser pointers, there is no need.
So do not disassemble the laser pointer and make the LD exposed.
Then it will be fine....

Nope, inside the laser body they are fine from static shock. If you touch the case, the ESD will just go through the case (Path of least resistance) and not worry the diode.
