I normally prefer to catch the spider and let it go out side rather than nuke or spray them. The one that suffered the laser too far out of reach for me to trap with a glass and a bit of cardboard.

looking back I probably should have coaxed him down with the broom then trapped him and set him free outside rather than blasting him!

I don't often kill spiders.
I either catch them and release them outside or feed them to something else. When I had a few pet scorpions and centipedes (caught them) the big wolf spiders made a good meal.

I have no qualms about torching "pests," however.
Roaches, flies, and ants are too low on my "hierarchy of life" for me to feel guilty about killing them.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but what about using laser to take out larger pests? My friend has a food distribution warehouse with a bunch of birds in it. The birds poop on everything making it quite unsanitary. We are planning on going after them with a couple of pellet rifles, but the noise might scare the others into hiding. There is also potential for ricochets and damage to the roof.

I am getting a 200 mW 532nm laser and a 1W 445nm laser. I plan to wear safety goggles and will have a pair for him as well. I imagine a stunned bird is much easier to take down. For those who are getting ready to flame and complain about animal cruelty, please don't The birds are a health department issue and they have to go. There is plenty of food in the warehouse so traps won't work. If the lasers are useless, we just go in with lead.

Well, shining near the beams would work. They'll fly away from the light. You don't need to blind them, because once you do, they just sit there. They can't fly and at best they'll start slamming into walls. Just get the dot close to them, and they should fly away. It works with geese.

Every day, just keep going back inside with the lasers to move them out if they return. If they have nests, and/or have young, they'll keep returning until the eggs are removed or the offspring starve to death.

For those who are getting ready to flame and complain about animal cruelty, please don't The birds are a health department issue and they have to go.

A health department mandate does not make it any more humane to torture birds.

I'm not looking to torture the birds. Just remove them since they are pests. If lasers are not effective, then I will simply use other means. I'm just trying to see if lasers could be more effective and reduce collateral damage (ricochets, property damage, bloody messes to clean up). I don't think high velocity lead pellets are very humane either, but they don't exactly listen when you tell them to leave.

birds are HORRIFIED of lasers!

ill use my 200mw 532nm to control flocks in mid air, its good fun! i think that blasting the most populated areas of the wherehouse with the beam/dot or even a simple spirograph would help you out tons!

but just getting it near em period fracks em out so bad tehy wont come back, pretty impressive that the dumpster downstairs in never crowded with crows/seagulls anymore, i think they all remember!

to adress teh original topic, although im usually against torching bugs and onterh pathetic creatures, there has been a spider slowly expanding his web by my front door...

...im saving him for the day the arctic arrives. then it goes in my locking glass case because i dont trust my friends

I did this with a PHR diode. I had a spider on the ceiling (We have a ranch style home, so we're talking 15ft up). I pointed the laser at it, and it moved. Freaked me for a second because I didnt expect much. I ended up poking at it for 5 mins...I got it to the door, I open the door, poked it more, and closed it. I drove the spider out with a laser :D

DjHeadie: If the laser is as good as WL says it is...1.5mm beam, ignites stuff instantly...I hope you dont point it at that poor spider and see it on fire...

My other method to kill bugs, Harbor freights electric flyswatter. Last night I hit a 1.5" moth with it...Stupidest thing I ever did, The thing turned into powder, wings, gone..Instantly! Was like a brown smoke screen X_X

They sell some goop to place where the birds land. They hate it and will take off, and not come back. There are also many other humane methods to detour the birds.

The goop will be a better idea than the lasers.

In part because you don't need to go out there every day with a laser.

Goop will not work in this situation. The warehouse is huge and you can't goop everything. The metal rood supports are at least 25 feet up and I would not risk a potentially fatal fall for the sake of humanely treating birds.

What are the other humane ideas you have? Keep in mind that this is a food warehouse and baits are less effective due to unlimited food sources. Poisons must be very carefully administered since it will be in the proximity of food.

It seem that those PL guys are fucking moron, did you see the video where they laze an helicopter?

I think its very wrong to hurt an animal with a laser.

SEEM LIKE YOU ENJOY THOSE KIND OF THINGS.

How about when u see a spider in your room, you grab her and let her out by opening the windows?

Just use the 200mW green near the birds. Be very very careful not to blind them.

Just do what the farmers do, being no longer allowed to fire guns to scare them off, they buy fireworks and use them to scare them off, see if you can buy some firecrackers, they work wonders for getting birds out of fields.
