Laser to melt small hole through large snow piles?

Was very curious about this one.

Has anyone here tried setting up a powerful laser pointer in one spot and melting a small hole through several feet of snow? Certainly someone has thought of this before!

snow is very reflective so it probably wont work

it has crossed my mind to shine through snow but winter is not here yet :D:D

Shining a laser through falling snow at night is actually quite beautiful IMHO... but yeah, aside from much higher powered lasers, snow is far too reflective to melt.

I would think that the CO2 laser would also melt the glass =p Or at least burn a hole in it.

We don't ever get snow here, so I haven't been able to try it with my CO2 laser, but 10.6um is absorbed by water very well :)

The problem is, snow is pretty dense, so I'm not sure how quickly or much you could melt through. You'd probably have to try it and see.

I'll get this experiment going then. All I need is some snow and a video camera. I'll try tomorrow sometime.

Heck, I've also wanted to try out dry ice under the beam of my CO2.

CO2 laser + dry ice = irony yes?

Hmmmm, that gives me an idea, what do you think a 1W would do to dry ice?
