laser burners from CD/DVD writer drives

Ok so I have been looking for a burning laser from a cd/dvd burner drive and I have only come across weak red diodes and infrared diodes in old computer drives. Are there specific types of burners that have the more powerful diodes in them? If so, what are they and where can I find them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It has been several years since this hobby was at this level.
I can't remember the drive numbers or the diodes we harvested.
If the search feature here doesn't return information, look for
newer red diodes available on the forum. Using the old diodes
would likely need old drivers which you can build as we did then.

I've noticed the Sonys and LGs work well especially the Sonys because they are easier to extract. I like then because you can get the DVD drives for cheap. I got 7 paid $1 a piece last week. Also They put out about <175mw usually but this may very because there's quite a few.

^ yes, sony will have 405nm (purple) diodes, whereas mitsubishi will have red. the three mits i can think of off the top of my head are LPC-815, LPC-826, and LPC-836. I think the 815 is the most efficient, but don't quote me on that...

Ok awesome, any idea where I can pick up those Sony drives for that price? I am definitely more interested in the 405 blu ray diodes than the reds

Look for those getto Computer repair shops, there's one on almost every city corner. The new drives they might sell for more but the old ones they sell boxes of them per pound because some people extract the precious metals from the pins and processors. Anything blue ray will be a bit more, think the others ^ said I'm sure there is a thread with the proper cereal numbers

Dead drives are usually as good as the live ones diode-wise. The diode is often the last thing that goes
bad. Getting them out can be "fun", to say the least. I had a Sony drive the other day that was a
particular, well, let's just say I want to kill whoever decided it would be a good idea to put all that glue on
there. I haven't actually gotten around to testing the diode yet, but there is no obvious physical
damage, at least to the important parts. For a driver, all you need is one of the cheap adjustable drivers
that fits inside an AixiZ module.
