Laptop Laser

Hello, I'm new to the forums.

I decided to take apart my old laptop and was wondering if I could have more information about this laser within the CD/DVD burner.

Model: GSA-T50N
Read speed: 24x CD-ROM/ 8x DVD-ROM
Write speed: 8X DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+R9, 5x DVD-RAM, 24x CD-R,16x CD-RW

Basically I want to know how powerful it is and what I need to do in order to make it work. I've looked over the forums and a few other sites but there's just so much information.

Also what kind of laser glasses should I purchase?

Just extracted the lasers. Here's what they look like.

Something around 50mW of IR and 100mW of red, and probably in a difficult package like 3.8mm. Unless you want to build something just for the experience, this really isn't worth your time. You can get similar performance from a complete module for <$5 I think.

Yes, I want to gain some experience working with lasers as I plan to move onto more powerful ones later on. I find salvaging things interesting and part of the fun.

I'll look around for tutorials and read up more on this. Do you have any advice for a beginner?
