Default Interesting Label...

So I ordered what is supposedly a 300mw 650nm red focusable laser with a couple of projection tips from dailyshop.com (chinese site). 2 Weeks later it arrives and I was amused by the warning label...

2000mW of tunable 808-980nm IR?

The beam does appear to be ~100mw of 650nm (beam is barely visible in dark room), so I think I at least received something close to what I ordered. Just couldn't believe they would put such a ridiculous label on it.

Oh wow. Sorry you only got 1/3 what you paid for, but at least it was better than IR...

When I read the label description my mind first thought: "2W of 808nm.... yes I can see how that might look like a high power red laser... if you stared at the spot... I feel bad for whomever pick/pack/shipped this unit!"

Those Chinese sell a lot of high powered IR pointers for some reason...
I guess because people look at the power and nothing else and once the sale is done they can disappear and rename themselves.

Near IR is frequently seen as dim red.
Be very very careful. The IR will cook your eyes without you seeing a thing.

Use a camera or something to view it again. Most ccd camera can pick up the IR.

I'm almost positive it's not IR, since the BEAM is visible, not just the diode, and I'm ABSOLUTELY positive it's nowhere near 2000mW (it BARELY burns when focused). I'm pretty sure this is just a cut and dry case of Chinese quality control at it's finest.

When a laser is labeled with a range (808-980nm) it means the wavelength falls into that range, not that it is actually tunable (not counting the shift with temp). It does serve to show what your goggles need to cover.
Diodes don't come out as an exact wavelength from manufacture. I'm sure its easier then testing & printing exact labels.
