I've melted ice before, it doesn't cut as nicely as yours but it does make a hole. I don't think it affects glass at all, though.

You need long waves for the ice I believe. Never saw a pointer doing that.

I think it works better on "white" ice than "transparent" ice. The hole has less of a defined shape as well.
