Try an order the cheapest laser you can find. Has to be 1mW or less. By a diode on ebay. They are not illegal to import. You can get a laser driver pretty easy aswel or make one if you have the skills. Dissasemble your cheap laser and insert the more powerful components. This is the only way youl ever be able to have a powerful laser here.

I spoke to the Firearms Branch here in Australia today and they said the laser pointer laws are again under review. Asked all kinds of questions on why I wanted a piss ant 1mW laser. Might mean nothing will happen but I wouldnt be supprised if they ban them totaly to an illigitimate user.. Shesh it was only a few months ago I could buy a laser that could light a match accross the room now all of a sudden they're such danergous devices that you can go to prision for using or trying to import. Total b/s.

What dont ya understand about these laws ???? -

"What types of laser pointers will
be controlled? The amendment to the Regulations affects hand-held articles,
commonly known as laser pointers, designed or adapted to emit
a laser beam with an accessible emission level of greater than
1 milliwatt (mW)."

Head over to the customs website and read it for your self. If you try an import a laser 1mW> then at best it will just be consficated. At worst -

"Penalty: the maximum penalty for importing these goods
without import approval is $110,000 or 3 times the value of the
goods, whichever is the greater."

So its your gamble if you want to try. Contact your local Firearms branch, they will tell you what you have to do to get approval for a laser pointer 1mw>. You'd better have a good excuse for wanting one though or chances are they'll just laugh at your application and throw it out.

Here in Canada, thet are totaly legal, when my DX 20mW went thru, I found signs that they had open the box and checked out the laser. I'm happy to see that.

Ya, come to Canada, it's a great idea, but be careful, I think Ontario and British-Colombia have import laws...

I live in BC, and have had customs open some of my DX orders. I've never had any problems.

I'm not a lawyer, but the only piece of Canadian law I could find regulating lasers is The Radiation Emitting Devices Act (C.R.C., c. 1370), which talks about restrictions on laser scanners and "demonstration lasers", ie: lasers "primarily intended to be used for demonstrating the principles of optics in educational institutions." - which can't be above 1mW.

Anyways, like what people have said above, only laser pointers have restrictions on them. Laser parts and components, or other devices incorporating lasers aren't regulated, and realistically can't be, otherwise people will have a lot of problems watching DVD's or listening to CD's or printing things with laser printers, etc.
