Smile iLasik eye surgery

I figured this was a general laser topic

I'm booked in on April to get iLasik laser eye surgery.. Anyone else had it?

My general eye sight (even with glasses) is rubbish, can't read menus at KFC, have big trouble reading Street signs more than a couple of meters away, prescription wise one eye is - 4 the other - 3.2. So short sightedness.

I'm going with one of new Zealand top surgeons Dr Nick Mantell - you can read about him Eye Surgeon, Eye Specialist, Eye Doctor : Dr Nick Mantell

Anyone had any personal experience with iLasik specifically? It sounds to be leagues ahead in accuracy and healing time compared to Lasik.

I'mnnervous yet totally excited about this awesome opportunity I'm going to dive into!!

Ps I'm totally going to say "fire Ze lazooor" before it all starts

Daryl

You think that's bad? I had a motorcycle crash that tore both of my retinas. I was in the Canadian Forces as a combat arms reservist where the required vision is roughly -1.25 or better, and corrected at 20/20... I am now at -8.5 in my left eye and -7.5 in the right. Thank god for high quality contacts. I can't begin to fathom how thick glasses would be at this strength. I am considering laser eye surgery in the future, but right now, my funds are tied up with tuition, lasers, alcohol, skydiving, and all other good things. Perhaps in the future, I will be back to perfect (or at least near perfect) vision, but until then, I wish you the best of luck with your procedure. I've heard nothing but good things from friends who have gotten it done!

No I know it's not hugely bad but what I'm saying is even with glasses or contacts my vision has never been corrected to anything anywhere near what I'm happy with, especially I'm comparison to other friends with glasses, and I've tried many different optometrists.. Those vision issues I quoted are when wearing corrective optics , I even had a research paper written on my eyes when I was about ten due to their oddity. I wish I still had that info!

Shit, that is some kind of joke right?? Even if not I'd way rather hand over money to specialists, it's approx $4000USD here, a pittance

If you are having trouble reading menus or signs more than a few feet away your glasses are not strong enough or have the wrong type of lenses. That's the real problem, rather than the glasses as a concept being ineffective.

Have you been tested for astigmatism? If you have astigmatism, even the correct strength lenses will not work for you since the curvature of your eye bends light differently than most people's. I'd suggest checking that out first before taking the plunge with laser eye surgery.

I'm not convinced its the strength of the glasses, but one never knows ! after multiple testings most optometrists seem to suggest the same strength.

I do have an Myopic Astigmatism in one eye, and have contacted my surgeons optometrist to discuss this, hoping for a call back today - as far as im aware iLasik might be able to fix this by changing the shape of the cornea, but the evaluation beforehand will let me know !

**Edit, spoke to my upcoming optometrist who works at the eye surgery, he is fairly certain he can correct it! unless i have a thin cornea, or poorly managed diabetes (which i may actually have, doctors think i should get it checked out)

I was thinking this same thing. There might even be the possibility of having lazy eye. I'm 20/20 in the left and 20/3095673460324673 in the right. My right eye can't be correct to 20/20 with corrective lenses or surgery. With as much correction as possible, it is still worse than 20/800 which I think is the biggest letter on the chart. Maybe it's 20/400.

now that you mention lazy eye i do remember as a child when about 5-6 years old having a lazy eye condition, they put cellotape over the edge of the left lens so when my eye drifted over it would go fuzzy then snap back to the centre, fixed it up pretty quick maybe something in relation to that has developed.

eyes are amazing things!! im looking forward to seeing what they have to say

Hey nice to see another kiwi here

Any chance you could find out who he saw? I'm guessing it's either Dr Gray or Dr Mantell at the eye institute in Auckland!

I'm in Wellington Btw, not too far from you!

I'm looking forward to bring amazed, the plane flight home is going to be spectacular! Totally making sure I get a window seat lol

Default Re: iLasik eye surgery

I had it done a few years ago. They used a femptosecond pulse laser to vaporize tissue around cornea so they could fold it back for the main lasik burns (ie. bladeless)... the cornea prep was less than a minute per eye and lasers for correction were about 20 seconds per eye. The interlase system basically has a tracking computer that locks onto hundreds of points in your iris around your pupil. As long as the targeting system doesn't lose lock during the 20 second burn, you have like a 95+% chance of 20/20 or better. My vision was so poor prior to the surgery that I couldn't see without glasses... not even basic function. I could sit up and see across the room clearly immediately after the procedure and within a few weeks, I was 20/15 in both eyes. My right eye is a little less accurate not due to a snowmobile trip blunt force trauma to it a year or so ago, but basically the whole experience was the best five grand I've ever spent. I can't say enough good things about laser eye correction.
