I propose we start a junk box.

Okay, if enough people wanted to start a, "Junior European Virtual Junk Box", then I'd be happy to host it too. The trouble as I see it would be the organisation though. I remember a while ago seeing an Excel spreadsheet with stuff on it, (on the open board), but it seemed cumbersome immediately. I mean, would I hold all stock or would the items be held by the individuals? I'd be responsible to update therefore but what if someone based a whole project around an item no longer available that I missed? Who would mediate if customs DID intervene?

I'm all for this sort of thing but I think it would be easier to just know who may have the stuff I'm after and contact them. I know if I was interested in parts for an X-ray machine, (or in depth info regards stepper motor control ;) ) , I'd contact Uranium; if I was interested in a green HeNe I'd contact Daguin; LED info or PWM LD driving I'd go to FireMyLaser...

The community provides I think. Being a global forum the genuine sentiment is outweighed by the logistics. Cool stuff crops up from time to time in the B/S/T section well before it gets offered on Ebay, and if it doesn't, I'm pretty sure I know who I'd ask first if I needed something particular. If they can't help me, then I know they'll know a man who can.

It's not apathy or negativity that opposes this idea, just practicality I think.

Thirded.

Find someone to run it, and it would work just fine.

Should the goods stay at their respective owners, and allow them to be shipped out together, or should they all be kept by one 'guardian of the box'?

It seems people here are really closed minded.

Don't insult people here just because you didn't think your idea through.

People here are open-minded. That open-mindedness allowed them to consider your idea and decide that it was bad. They're not stupid.

All of these previous suggestions are totally vaild. The simple problem is logistics.

This is a global forum meaning cross-continental shipping; legal issues; packaging; etc. It's not that noone wants it to happen, it's just that it's impratical. It may work on a continental wavelength; i.e. UK members can share a box; US members can share a different box and so on... But Globally this can't work. One guy stocking a random box of stuff for the whole planet?!!! Simply not possible.

I'm happy to build and stock a UK version, with the help of the UK members. Other countries or locals can do the same and perhaps store them in a, "Stickie", but one mass storage unit is unsound IMHO.

Can we regionalise this sensibly maybe?

@Morgan.
I agree. Also I think you can make groups on here so either each Section of the world that wants to do this can make a group or Cold can just make a whole new section on the forum. Any ideas?

Hey, precisely my point, but this is a new idea to share a global responsibility so it's up to us to work something out. To start talking continental sections is an admin level nightmare way beyond...

I would suggest that Uranium PM Cold and see what he can suggest. I have no objections to being the GB section, (not Group Buy in this case but Great British!), representative.

This is small fry for over here though. I can think of only a handful of dedicated UK members that would benefit. The US must have hundreds to consider.

This ain't an easy thing to implement.

With the greatest respcet, I would still go on the, "If I need stuff, I know who to call...."

To get this started you should edit your original post explaining everything then see if we can get a list going. Start off with two sections. U.K. and U.S.A. Then when we know we have enough members that would join we can start something up but you will have to set standards. Maybe 500 posts with some type of review or something. I couldn't be on the list but I would sell something and get the 500 posts to do this. :)

500 seems a little high. Maybe just people who have proven themselves to be actually interested in the hobby. It's late right now. I'll edit it tomorrow.

Have Australia and New Zealand part of the US group, for ease of logistics.

Also- anyone who has a rep of 2 or over, and has been a member for over 3 months should be allowed to swap parts from the box.
