Sorry to hear you're out Bloom. I understand though, you are the "Gas Fanatic" ;) Will keep an eye out for your thread and upcoming posts.

Nice Issac, will wait to see that sexy host of yours :)

Great news Wolfman! Looking forward to seeing how the board turned out :)

Since everyone's doing updates, the battery box has been cut in half and the driver parts and
tooling have arrived. I should have taken a couple pictures of the table saw setup, but alas I
did not. It involved a 2x8 and a very large C clamp for the motor mount. I also ordered a
completely different fully assembled driver from DX as a backup. Their shipping is apparently
very slow.

As far as the micro goes, it seems that there is no decent support for the newer chips on the
PICkit™ 1 under Linux, so I had to do a little unanticipated programming. :D I still haven't
decided on how exactly the graphics and "wrapper" will be done. Plastic, such as a
transparency, would be nice. Maybe laser printed for better durability.

Wow, sounding exciting Lightning Stalker! Saw that massive chunk of metal you're working with

Programming? Should be cool :)

Yeah. Cooling is a major concern in this design since there are over 15W of heat in there to
be dealt with - srs poweh. Then there are switching losses in the driver and heating in the
batteries. I'm tempted to go over to the "bench" and grab the 8Ω 20W resistor to see what
15W actually feels like, possibly attaching it to said piece. Not now though. :tired:

Programming? Should be cool :)

Hopefully :undecided: The app is called usb_pickit. Modifying someone else's program can
be difficult. In this case though it was easier than reinventing the wheel.

So another update: I swapped out one of the set resistors for a bigger one so now it'll go up to 2.82A. I think I am comfalortable leaving it there. My driver maxes out at 3A, and I don't want it to overheat too much.

Right now, I am soaking the switch board in IPA because there is some superglue stuck in there from when I failed to install a few buttons correctly. Hopefully, the buttons will come out nicely so I can replace them. Then, tomorrow, I should be able to have the entire phaser up and running, only with leads attached to a testload coming out the front instead of a laser :D

I hope the IPA works! Otherwise, I may have to delay it :\ I dunno how I can get those buttons out! It was a mistake to use cyanoacrylate before actually checking that the buttons were oriented properly XD

If only the FDA could see this now... Laserbeak, when's the voting goin down? Good luck to everyone. Looking at how old my design is I wonder if anyone will even vote for it...

Cantthinkofone, I will open a voting thread on the last week of September. Once the forum members decide on the final two contestants, the diodes will be sent out :)

I think I just made a huge breakthrough in my process. I am buying a used Optotronics RPL host that is already ready for a C-Mount diode, and then have my Lens modded for the host. Or vice versa

Sounding good Issac! The RPL looks like a good sized host and a plus that it's already set for a C-mount :)

Just a little update - was having some trouble gluing one of the buttons into the holder! (There had been CA there before, which sucks because CA doesn't like to bond to CA.) Regardless, though, I think it should work :D Gonna have to grind down the plunger though a little bit. Soon though! After breakfast, I am going to glue the other one down. Then I'll adjust the buttons so they are even, and then I will attach the "on" button to the mosfet :D Then it should be all set up to go!

Ah, CA, I've had a lot of fun with that. Used to work in a prototype shop years ago. Always had de-bonder on hand. (pun intended) ;)

Best of luck, know you'll get the buttons squared away. You're getting close now :D

So I just got back from breakfast. The second button was a lot more receptive =p I think I used a lot less CA where the old button was on that side, so it is bonding a lot more readily this time. Just waiting for this to finish bonding, then I gotta sand down the plungers a bit to even them out, then just attach the buttons and wires to the driver ^_^

Alright, sorry for double posting, but here is my video of the phaser! I don't yet have a heatsink, but I have a pretty hefty amount of room to one there.

anyway, I'll let the video speak!

Really nice work so far ! :)
You did very good work with your driver, nicely done that power switching and the fact that not 3A flowing through your momentary buttons.

Maybe I can help you with your 14500 problem. ;) A good branded cell is the Sony us14500v its a high current imr supporting over 5A.
See the test of it here AkkuDB
If it fits it would the best cell for this IMO
