I was just wondering how much brighter in mW does adding some fog make a laser look ? i have a 50mw green, and when i add a lil bit of incense the beam is like super bright, like it's 200mW !
How much more would fog add to a lasers beam mW wise ? like a 50mw with fog looks like a 200mW laser ?

That question cannot be answered without a lot of "depends."

Our perception too light is not linear.

Brightness wise, it depends on the density of the fog.

mW is a units of power, or energy per time.  The power coming out of the laser doesn't change due to fog, the power stays the same regardless of what you're shooting the laser into.  50mW is 50mW.  Power also doesn't change with color.  50mW is 50mW, whether, is be red, blue, green, or purple.

The visibility of a beam changes due to particles in the air.  Smoke, fog, whatever puts more particles in the air, the light scatters/reflects, and more of it is diverted from the beam path to your eye.  This makes it more visible only because some of the light that is there no matter what was diverted by the smoke, but otherwise wouldn't have been diverted.

To find the mathematical increase in perceived brightness from an amount of smoke, you're gonna need some heavy math there.  It's one of those problems where I say to myself "yeah, I see how I might approach that maybe, but it'll take days to do no matter how I do it".  And really, I don't think you need anything specific, more smoke = more beam visibility is good enough for me at least.

If anything, the beam's mW's gets weaker with fog/smoke.

yeah it seems you worded the title wrong lol. When you say it adds mW to the laser I picture lighting a match or cutting electrical black tape much faster just because there is fog lol.

How much more mW does incense/fog add to a laser ?

One day it was super foggy outside , couldn't see 10 meters in front of me, so I thought I pull out the laser and shine it around, then , all of a sudden , BOOM!!! a huge explosion.Turns out I melted a hole in the gas tank of a car due to the increase in power and the gas ignited from the red hot steel.

Re: How much more mW does incense/fog add to a las

you actually lose power if you use fog.

:)

anything in the air will reduce the power of your lasers.

but looks wise i dont think theres a way to tell all the fog does is makes the beam seem wider and more visible.

i can make my 60mw green beam look as "visible" as my 500 beam

(of course thats not being scanned)

What i meant was, how much more does fog make the beam look mW wise ? so like a 50mw looks 50mw, but a 50mw with fog looks way brighter

Fog doesn't add power to your laser, it just makes the beam appear brighter.

There's no real way to tell. Simply put? A hell of a lot brighter. But you knew that.

Re: How much more mW does incense/fog add to a las

mW has very little to do with "perceived" brightness.

Peace,

you cant express than in mW. it's way too hard to calculate. and useless.
