Default How do you pot mod a 5mW lyra laser from Laserglow.com?

Just got it today, it works fine but 5mW seems so low for it being such a smexy laser ...and I heard someone modded the Rigel, so how do I mod this?
I have like no knowledge about playing w/ lasers so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You don't pot mod a Lyra. The Rigel is an entirely different type of laser, and they got very, very lucky they didn't kill their laser. Buy a True 5 from DX if you want to pot mod something.

Why would you essentially destroy a nice quality laser from laserglow?

Default Re: How do you pot mod a 5mW lyra laser from Laserglow.com?

If you want more power, buy a more powerful laser. Keep this one for it's quality and get a lesser quality but more powerful one from DX, o-like, or rayfoss, or one of the other vendors known to the forum. Years ago, pot-modding worked very well on many green lasers. This has changed, trying to pot-mod nearly any green laser made these days will destroy the driver, the pump diode, or both, because the factory already has it running at the maximum it can do and still be reliable for a short time.

Thanks, but I have heard that CNI lasers are usually pot modded to half their normal maximum capacity, if I COULD pot mod this Lyra, that would be awesome.
However, if that means possibly sacrificing the life of this laser, then of course I will stop.

The Lyra is not a CNI laser.

In most cases, high quality greens are built with pump diodes running below their maximum capacity for longer life.
I'm sure this is the case for your Lyra, however there is a right and wrong way to "pot mod" a laser.

To be sure that you are not destroying your laser, you need to measure the current going to the diode. If you simply turn the potentiometer to the max, you may end up killing the diode.

Also, most of the higher quality pointers are built with an APC circuit that automatically adjusts the current to maintain a stable 5mW. This would have to be disabled if you want to get more power.

Before you "pot mod" a laser ask yourself these questions:

1. Can I take it apart without damaging the finish?
2. Is the driver capable of producing enough current for a substantial gain in pump power?
3. Can the crystals support more pump power?
4. What is the maximum rated power that the diode can produce?
5. What is the current already set at?

If your answer to any of these questions is "I don't know," you probably shouldn't be messing with it.

If you have LIKE no knowledge about the science, Read here and then read some more.
SO, you know, that the days of pushing a 5 mW to 75 mW are gone.

Thanks all, RA_Pierce especially, who has helped answer my former noobish questions very patiently, and since I know almost nothing about the Lyra, I guess I won't mess with it.
I can always get a X15 from Nova if I really want the better beam specs...

Yeah, so I take the hammer, CRUSH the Lyra, then throw it into a cylindrical bin. And that will make my 5mW laser turn into a BURNING MONSTER that will light matches at will All right, I give up.
