How can I convince my parents to let me get a burning laser?

I recently started getting into lasers. I've watched tons and read tons about how they work, how to build them, etc. Obviously I wanted to get my own. I'm only twelve though so everything has to run through my parents. It took tons of begging for them to allow me to even get a 5mW green laser. I really want a burning laser but my parents say no. Not because of not trusting me (I have knives, fire, etc. and am very trsutworthy) but more worried about an accident or one of my friends getting ahold of it. I also plan on building the laser (200mW Red) with my own money that I earned (not that my parents just give me). How can I convince them to let me buy one? Also, please don't be telling me about how I don't need a laser at this age. I understand all the safety issues and plan to get laser goggles if I am allowed to get the laser. Thanks.

First learn how to edit your posts as some here will brow beat you for double posting :scowl:

So maybe you should think about building the 200mW red laser first as it's going to be easier I think than getting them to cave in and just purchase a HP laser

And get safety glasses before you do any thing else :)

Good luck and be safe...

An easy solution - tell your parents that you won't be taking it to school. That eliminates a ton of mistakes that can happen involving lasers (I know firsthand, unfortunately)

And stick to your promise and make sure they know you're being honest (leave it on the kitchen table before you leave, etc.)

Explain that this laser won't burn down your house the second you point it at your walls, and that you've read up on how they work and the proper safety precautions needed to use it. You parents are just looking out for your safety. If they know that nothing wrong will happen, the odds are in your favor.

Good luck

It sounds like your parents main concern is with regards to you friends rather than you.

I suggest that you ask them to get you a 100mW-200mW green laser with safety features - most definitely at least a key. That way you can keep the key separate... even if your friends, siblings, etc, get a hold of it, they can't just press the on button.

Your best bet would be to pickup a laser secondhand here on the forum.

As an occasional seller I can tell you though, that no one responsible would sell you a laser without first getting proof of age/identity from one of your parents, and without talking to them first.

As you already know, you most definitely will need to get goggles.

Thanks. Good idea but I already have had that conversation with them about not bringing it to school. they still say no though :( but I will try to explain the power of burning. My dad thinks because they can light matches they will instantly burn someone who breaks the beam.

I actually I want to build the laser not buy it. But I will buy one with the safety stuff if thts what it takes to convince my parents. Thanks.

I think they also are just totally prejiduce against lasers because of them being on the news because of the dang people who are ponting them at cars and airplanes.

Try what i did. I recently had an argument with my parents as well, unlike you im 17 turning soon 18. I've always been trustworthy with dangerous things, knives, bows, fire, im sure you are the same. And the reason was the same when they wouldn't let me have a laser. Reasons being, friends, safety, accidents, and also laws. Check up on the laws your state has for lasers, prove that you can have one. But also, show them that you are responsible. What i did was show them that i am not an idiot when it comes to dangerous things, and that i was willing to put the extra money/time to get everything i would need to assure my safety. That being goggles and such. It will help your parents feel much more relieved if they know that you are taking steps into your own safety.
If they see that you are responsible, which you seem to be, they will listen. But don't pressure them constantly. Give them time :)

Ok thanks. I have been pestering them haha. And the only laws about lasers that apply to my area are the national U.S laws

If you have a cat, argue "feline anal region hair removal." Cause who wants to touch cat butt? There's a thread for listing practical uses and that's my favorite :D

Haha! If I get one powerful enough I can do hair cuts :) I can also practice being an optomitrist by doing laser eye surgery.

well i know this may be frowned upon but... how about you find a sled (broken xbox, dvd burner, bluray player, etc)? and take out dvd drive and harvest diode from sled :)
there is hosts you can buy w/ keys in the back too.
but i do not want to get you in trouble (and if you do this i am not responsible :eg:)
it seems they are worried about the safety but if its regarding ordering a high powered diode then this is your best option (they also may not like sending money to a member on a forum even though it is more reliable than Chinese company)
 Justin
i hope you change thier opinion :) good luck.

Same goes for girlfriends and wives. Life is much less complicated without them.

You ok Moh!?!?! still going stong right? you newly wed you.

For the OP if you even have to ask this question having a high powa laser around is prolly not going to be your parents cup of tee. Wait awhile is my suggestion.
