Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd post my high current voltage regulator build here that I've been planning on doing for a while now. All the parts arrived today so I got to work shortly after they arrived.

Here is a schematic, you can add more transistors on to get more current if you need it. I'm currently using an LM7806 which is giving me 5.3V at 45A after the transistors. I've got some LM1084 adjustable regulators here so I'm going to add one of them once I have some other parts ( Potentiometer and a resistor ).

And the finished build. I would have made the wiring neater if I had more space and time as well as some better wire.

All of the parts can be bought on eBay for cheap, that's where I got mines. The heatsinks can be found there too - although mines were salvaged from an old computer and a broken Dell hotswappable server PSU.

Only one suggestion, for the safety of your transistors ;)

When you use 2 or more transistors in parallel, be sure to do one of these things (both is the better choice, but if not possible, at least one)

Check that all the paralleled transistors come from the same production lot (all the numbers on the bodies must be identical, not just the part number) ..... or, add in serie to each emitter a 0,1 ohm resistor, dimensioned for the current that flow in each transistor, for decoupling (usually need power resistors, anyway)

for a high volatage driver couldnt you use a ddl driver but with an ACM chip (or maybe its an AMC?) and have some discharge caps and resistor behinf the LD at the output.

That is a voltage regulator with a Darlington follower. I really agree that you need high current emitter balancing resistors and feedback for stability.

So what you going to power up with this beast, You got some crazy 50 watt diode ?
Yea like they said put them low ohm resistors in series with the emitter leads and it will work out much smoother ;)

I know this is an old thread, but I never got back to it.

I plan to drive a large array of LEDs from a battery so I needed something simple which would regulate the high current going to the LEDs.

Going to do a rebuild soon I think and finally get the variable regulator on and make everything neater too.
