hey all...

hey guys whats happening. new member here just joined, from australia. was scooping around your forum for the past week or so trying to find info for the ps3 laser but to no avail. anyway

im sure you's know that lasers are banned in australia. they were banned because some kids were aiming at flying aircraft which supposedly hit the pilots eyes... numerous times. so yeah, now theyre banned.

so i decided to build my own. i have here my ps3's blu-ray diode. my ps3 had died so i thought what the heck. i was wondering what i needed for this laser to function. now i know i need a resistor of some sort, a 9 or 6v battery and a lens to focus it. could you guys please tell me the process? what do i need to buy? how do i put it all together? is there a certain guideline i have to follow? any info will help me.... thanks in advanced, murat.

in 5min of searching. Should have the information you need, which is that, as Prototype said, the PS3 diode is good for about 20mW.
If you really want to go ahead and build a 20mW blu-ray then good luck. There are many threads you can use to get an idea of how to build it. You'll just have to find out how many milliamps the diode will need (which I am sure some members here will know if it has not been posted).

yeah i wanna just start with this blu - ray project, see how we go. hopefully if all goes well ill start others... first need the basics though.

Hi and welcome!

In addition to Laserbee's recommendations, I must mention that if you intend to do a DIY laser out of the components of your dead PS3, you must have some basic knowledge of basic electronics, and own tools like a DMM and a soldering iron. The forum has lots of info on the delicate process of extracting your laser diode out of the drive, then you'll need some components like an aixiz module and a diode driver circuit (ready made like rckstr or lava, or made yourself out of a LM317).

I don't want to discourage you but if you have never built a project from scratch, building a laser is a rather elaborate and delicate process and can be quite frustrating, so you might want to start with a few primers on basic LED blinker circuits and acquiring all of the necessary tools and components before risking destroying a $10 diode.

On the other hand, if you're all equipped and can read a schematic, you're in the right place and the forum has a wealth of information on how to harvest a diode, the correct voltages to apply, pinouts, heat sinking and many other subjects. There are also several aussie members in here that will gladly assist you!

Once you're started, it will be a very addictive hobby, I can assure you!
