Asking for your advice. I need a laser unit that will run on battery power (like a AA) and outputs a "line" instead of a dot. The line would need to be around 12" long at 10" from the device. I need something inexpensive that will live in a custom molded case. Sorry for being so ignorant, hoping you can point me to a supplier of components. Perhaps this beam shape is called leveling.

If I understand you correctly, I would suggest looking into a laser level device that is used in the construction/home improvement area. I am sure you could create a variable aperture via a threaded design to control the length of the projected line. If I am incorrect, maybe offer a little more of the particulars of your final needs.

It's taking FOREVER to get this from Hong Kong. Anyone with experience with these shipments. I'm worried.

Dealextreme shipping can take a while. I have waited 20 days before for a shipment.

lol you'll probably have to wait another week or two. My laser took exactly 4 weeks to arrive from them. Can't complain though for free shipping and amazing prices!

Laserglow also has a selection of alignment lasers called the Brightline series. They're quite affordable and of course we ship from Canada so you won't have to wait very long! You can run them off of 3V DC, so 2 x AA batteries will do quite nicely.

See http://www.laserglow.com/index.php?brightline
or email me for details.
