Been a while scene i'v been on this form but I've got a question about a laser at work and i know all you older guy's will know the answer.. or be close enough for me. :)

My question is "How many watts would it take to engrave, to a depth of about 3-5 mm in 303 stainless."

The laser we are using is:
YAG
1034Nm
Max output is 77Kw

But it's not, just as close as i could find.

We are using this software :

We are engraving these, at this time, so about 3-5 mm give or take.

I'm thinking around 30- 45 Watts?
Any one want to take a shot at this?

You will need at least 150W if you even want to consider making even a mark on metal. you'd need many kW to actually "cut" a reasonable depth into it.

Hi,

A Q switched 40W laser will mark stainless steel, 1 pass will be just a few microns.
Often a paste / coating is applied to the surface first to help the material absorb the laser.

You could make many passed "ablating" the material, but if you want to go 3mm deep, you'd be better off machining it (CNC machining centre).

Oh, i was way WAY off then.
Back in 97 i seen this laser doing some welding and they had it cranked up to about 5Kw.
I asked about the engraving, but no-one knows, as the program is set to "do a job, pick a job" and with no real info.
It's running thru parts pretty fast.
I thank it might be a SSD Q-switched.. but no info on the machine it's self outher then the info i posted..

Well, it's doing it in one pass, and no coating at all.
