It wasn't long ago that I thought 23 was really old, but here it comes in 10 days and I still feel mostly youthful!

Nah you are REALLY young, damn..... barely out of the nest.. Although I shouldn't say that, I left home at the age of 17 to join the USCG.

Relatively speaking I'm barely out of the nest . I went out on my own at 19, shortly after moving to Canada, living alone is great! Shame it doesn't leave much money in the laser budget though. :yabbem:

After I left the military and had to pay for rent and everything, I was surprised how much it costs "just to live", took most of my money, not much left for anything that wasn't necessary. Gets better when your are earning more, with more experience or perhaps education, if you are doing that, to get a higher paying job. The best advice I can give anyone young is go work for someone who will pay to teach you what you need to know, then start your own business.

Yes, it's the little things you don't think about before moving out that add up too.

Problem here is it's just super damn expensive for everything, a cheap one bedroom apartment starts at $1300/mo plus utilities.

I agree with that advice, do an apprenticeship if one is available in your field. You get experience, education, a pay check and a foot in the door. That's the way I went (IT apprenticeships are a thing!).

No one gets rich working for someone else, you are young enough to start planning your own business, once you get my age you are stuck working for someone else if you want to make a decent living. But starting your own thing will consume all of your time for a long time, huge amounts of it.

Why start your own thing? When older, it really sucks working with sharp young men who have an ego, or someone who thinks the way to get ahead is to try to make themselves look better than the next guy, in what ever way they can to do so. When you get older like me it becomes fairly difficult to put up with, I think that will get even worse as I get older. I think a lot of people retire because they get tired of the BS, when you have been around the block a dozen times, you know which houses have the cats and dogs, know what is coming next before you even turn the corner. Figuring out the possible problems coming are not if, instead they become a question of when.

Where you live is what makes it so expensive, in Alaska everything is 30 percent more expensive across the board, probably even more so where you are.

Haha, everybody thinks that, even when people meet me in person they always guess that I'm at least a couple years older. I had to show someone my ID when I was 19 to prove that I was in fact 19 and not 25... That's not how that's supposed to work. :undecided:

I've been told I have an "old soul".

A girl I dated a couple years back broke it off with me and said it was because I'm "too old". She dated a 45 year old professor after that. Oddly enough, he was also a Glaswegian living in Canada.

I feel I've become more lively since then... Little bit of a rude awakening
