So I just got my 589nm which I am super exited about. The only problem I have is battery related. I had an 18650 battery, but I havent seen it for a while. So I am stuck with cr123a batteries. I was wondering if I could temporarily use 2 cr123a batteries instead of 1 18650 battery.

I wouldn't take the risk if I were you. Most boost drivers shouldn't get over 5.5v, you might fry that thing. Just be patient and wait for a new 18650 or you may regret it.

Yeah you're right, any idea where I can buy (or even harvest) one locally?

some already mostly depleted 123's would probably work(reading lower than 2.7V) but then the issue of weather they would still be able to supply the current at that level of discharge might be an issue.

I would just get a 18650.

or just try one cr123 with a space of some kind, even a wad of tinfoil would work (not super great, but it would work), or a nail or something of the sort. Definitely better to just get an 18650 though. LarryDFW sells nice panasonic 18650's, would be worth PM'ing him to see if he has any in stock

Do NOT use 2 cells! As you might know, 589 pointers have an IR pump. This operates at ~2V, so the most common driver is linear. You triple heat dissipated in the driver by doubling the voltage, and it will not like that one bit.

I have yet to find a store that sells them, and I have looked, so forget about finding one locally, just buy them online. You can harvest them from most laptop batteries except a few newer ones that are very thin that use different batteries.

If you have an e-cig store near by, you might find a battery there. Those are the only stores I've seen that carry li-ion batts.

Here are all the Batteries Plus stores in Ohio. I bet they have them in a pinch... not the best quality, but work when you need instant gratification.
