Is this a good laser for diving?

Maybe this one will work for you ?

they say it's 50mW.

High Power Green Laser pointers - MEGAGREEN

i wouldnt want to get too strong of a laser though, dont want to blind you or the fishies:p

lol can you imagine being on a boat and someone with a 1W laser shines a beam thru the water and under your boat. I dont think i would want to be in the water to see that though...

That would be an incredibley amazing photo with something like a little row boat in the waves in the pitch dark blackness. And then all of a sudden a beam of light burst through the dark pitching waves beneathe the blackness piercing the water / air barrier into the night sky over the sea.

I have tested many of the cheap waterproof lasers from china.
Rayfoss, focalprice, o-like. Most leak at about 3 to 5 meters.
I would get the one you linked to. If the manufacturer claims it will work at that depth it's a great host to have. If 5mW isn't enough power (should be pretty dark down at 40m), you can likely replace the green dpss module with one that is brighter / more powerful.

I'm on the hunt for a green laser for diving. So far this is the best thing I could find: Green scuba laser pointer

Is this a good deal? Is there anything comparable for a better price or anything that will actually work better?

Unfortunately the answer is no. First, the output power is too low. Second, it's too hard to operate under water with twisty on/off (required 2 hand and tail cap rubbing against the o-ring) You don't want that under water. Three, the price.....

I do not agree with these statements. This person likely has no experience with waterproof lasers. :undecided:

Sure 5mW is fairly low power (especially for ~$100), but this will be used underwater at depths where it is relatively dark. You should be able to see the beam and dot very well. A higher powered (20mW and above) laser will likely scare the fish away (which is NOT what the OP [wraptor] wants) as the beam and dot will be very bright underwater.

I don't think the laser will be very hard to "turn on" underwater. (even with gloves on) twisting the back to turn it on seems much easier than pressing (and holding) a tiny button, or trying to get your (gloved) fingertip into a small tail-clicky.

If the laser really does survive at a depth of 40M, then it is worth the money, IMO.

Also, one thing to note is that you have the potential to mistakenly point the laser at other divers (possibly faces) and anything over 5mW has the potential to cause permanent injury.

This laser is rating at 100m of depth in water. Also I agree with you that clicky switch is useless under water because it's hard to access and doesn't work over certain depth, Water pressure. Therefore I believe that Underwater laser should have Magnetic hall effect switch. Also, if you are using underwater laser, likely fish won't like you very much, and more power is always better than less, because you can tune it down anytime you want with the circuit inside, and when you need more, it's always there!!

Perhaps you could design a waterproof host with a magnetic hall effect switch. They sell them at mouser. :)

This is true if you have built the laser yourself.

More power is not always better than less (cat-toy or lecture pointer for instance), but a tunable-power waterproof laser would be very nice.

I already have a design and working on circuits and prototype. It will have a magnetic switch and 100meter water resistant with 5mode or whatever, I still need to figure out the code for Attiny13.
