geocaching and lasers

If anyone here is into geocaching, dollar store red laser pointers are good items to put into the containers. The packaging on some of these 5mW lasers are funny: I found one claiming it's the most powerful, best quality red laser in the world.

I started getting into it for a while... even bought a cool app for my phone to help out... but then time got in the way. I still have an interest in it, but just busy with other things in life. I keep the app updated just in case I get a hankerin' to snoop around.

Great idea on the cheapie dollar store lasers for caches.

I make do without the app; Google Maps gets me close enough (though I'd be no match for well-camouflaged hides.). Have found only 5 caches so far, but it's a fun diversion, if one is within a mile or so of my current locale.

check out night geocatching with reflectors. wonder if you can make two holes you need to put a laser pointer in to find the catch or vertual catch. just an idea.

I have enough difficulty finding them in the daylight. Night-time searching sounds fun though. A laser activated lock or sensor to access it would be nifty.

Geocaching at night seems like it could be dangerous especially in some of the places around here, lots of mountains and woods to get messed up in after dark.

Cross the road around here can be dangerous what with all the cars ;-) Danger is everywhere, the key is to be sensible. We go geocaching every Friday night. We don't feel any more at risk than when we do it during the day. A good head lamp goes a long way to making things safer.

I can't believe it, it actually exists! Thanks for the link, will check it out. I was thinking of buying a cheap UV flashlight, from a mail order catalog but it's probably not powerful enough for night caching.

I'll have to keep that in mind. It might even be a good idea to make a little card with laser do's and don'ts. Probably could make some simple business cards for cheap.

I've found a little over 1300. That number hasn't changed much the past year. It's not something I care to do by myself. It doesn't help that there isn't very many around where I live. I was really into coillecting the coins too. I just sold off a huge chunk of them for close to $1,000.

Thanks for the UV link. I've only found less than 30 so far, but there are hundreds around here. Dr. Evil, If there aren't many caches in your area, you can hide a bunch of your own, it might inspire others. Didn't know a geocoin collection could fetch big bucks!
