Hey guys,
I have been an avid laser user for 5 years now. However, I have not approached it with the professionalism and knowledge I am reading on this site. Rather, I have used lasers artistically and creatively for performance in concert, rave, and festival environments. Over the course of 5 years, I've learned how to do a whole lot of tricks with my set of green lasers I bought a very long time ago in 2007. Back then, I was using dino direct... started with a 5mw green laser pointer, and moved up from there.
At one point in 2008, I bought about 20 green, 100mw kaleidoscopic laser pointer pens. You've probably all seen exactly what I am talking about... the long, black one with the pen hook that can hang on your pocket or collar, and the silver tip that rotates and creates the beautiful star-point pattern.
I have learned over the years that not all of them are created equal. Some of them have more points than others (the more points, the more amazing the effect). Some of them are sharper than others. The one I am using right now has lasted me about a year and has become much more fuzzy. The same open beam that used to be able to put a dot on a building far away now projects a circle. The kaleidoscopic points now look like diffuse points, which really doesn't give the same effect.
I never have let anyone else play with my lasers and always guide people to give me space, without ever pointing it in the direction of another person while the beam is open. I practice pretty damn good laser safety and hate it when I see amateurs using the lasers and shining them at crowds, at a stage, etc.
This laser is about to go out. Its on its last leg. Judging from what I have read, it probably was underspec'd. It was able to burn through paper at one point in history, although it took 30 seconds to do so. That's about it.
I am looking for a TRUE 100-200mw, kaleidoscopic green laser pointer. There are some issues that I face though:
The DESIGN of the old style, the style you can still see all over the web:
Is the design I am comfortable with. For one, the uniformity of the width down the length of the entire laser allows me to hold the tip while shaking the base back and forth (that sounded horribly sexual, get your mind out of the gutter) to create insane circle patterns and wave-patterns across the skin of everyone in a crowd. The ease at which the tip turned back and forth allowed for pretty fluid motion.
I see higher quality SEEMING lasers, but they won't work, because the flashlight style laser pointer almost seems to haphazardly place the same lens in a very non-ergonomic fashion, here's an example;
Quite simply, this won't work for what I do with my lasers.
So the question...
1) Does anyone know a reliable place to get quality-controlled versions of that first type of laser that I presented with a true kaleidoscopic head?
2) Does anyone have any recommendations for the laser with the sharpest points/the most points in the kaleidoscope?
3) Does anyone know of another laser design with a kaleidoscopic head that is easy to turn and has the same diameter across the entirety of the pointer, including the diffraction lens?
