Hi peps,

Looking to get a couple of lasers been talking with blord lasers, and looking to move on a purchase.

However rather than keep pestering kot with lot of pm's , as we keep coming up with more questions I thought this would be be a better place to ask?

The lasers are for me and my mate, the lasers will be used for tactical /survival purpose,

one of the questions raised was does 405nm @1watt has a greater burning distance then 445mn @ 1.5watt. I have spend the last couple of days searching for the answer and there seems to be conflicting information?

Another question to which I find no answer, is there a maximum burning distance of 3.5w @445 nm.. (smoke/fire) I understand there are a number of variables to take into account, just a rough guide would b helpful, also will we need an expander if so which types fit blord lasers?

I hope im not asking to stupid a question, we are new to lasers so want to purchase the right equipment first time ... buy nice or buy twice ..

single mode 1W of 405nm will burn at a greater distance than a multi mode 1.5W 445nm. I don't personally recommend getting a 405nm driven that hard, I've had them die driven to 900mW, my current one is turned down to 800mW, and still burns well. the 1.5W 445nm will burn better up close with a focal point.

energy density is key to burning distance. the bigger the dot, the less burning ability. 445nm diverge relatively quickly, and BE are not particulary practical for extending this range in my experience. there is some power loss in the lens and the focal points a 10X BE will make are not as pin-point as those made by normal lenses at aperture. it is possible I suppose, but even with >3.5W, you will have extreme difficulty with ignition at long range, though it'll be cake point blank.

does any one know if we could achieve a 10 mtr burning distance with the 3.5 watt laser form blord ?

the 1.5 is not so important.

10 meter burning maybe, probably not ignition, at least not without additional lenses. what is the target to be? why do you need it to do this?

To cut a very long story short, we are looking to use the laser in the field.

A) remote activation of traps for rabbits.
B) lighting damp material instead of ,or in addition to flint/ lighter
C) field signals.
D many other things.

if we are not able to get 10mtrs, I not a problem that was what we put into you plan.

please note we are on private land and there are no other people about,
it is something we would like to play around with.. as my wife says boys n their toys.

You mention adding a optical lens, this will be a blord laser 3.5w. do you have any recommendations.

lasers have a difficult time igniting damp material. is the 3.5W to use the old gen 9mm diode or new? the new one is rated to handle that (3.5W), the old ones I have also had die driven that hard after a relatively short life, I recommend having them driven to maybe around 2.5W, the new ones cost more but can handle the power better. the lens I mentioned could be a magnifying glass, to use down range from the laser beam, put in front of the beam to re-focus the it to a focal point before it diverges too much. but if you can go down range to add a lens, why not just move the laser closer to burn?

I dont know, blord is the one making this unit the dominator 3.5w,


The long range was just an idea that came up for burning, we will play around with the unit to see what can be achieved.
magnifying glass is easy to add into the mix cheers for the idea.

ask blord if he can put in the new generation 9mm 445nm diode, if you are willing to pay another $220 or so. the new diodes are designed to handle 3.5W, and can be pushed up to 6W, though I wouldn't recommend this. the old ones are rated around or below 2W if I recall and are being pushed as hard as possible to achieve 3.5W. I personally would recommend either getting the old gen, but having it driven lower, about 1.8A or less. this would give around 2.5W. the new gen one could be driven considerably higher, 2.5A-3A runs it at it's rated output of 3.5W to around 4.2W

I spoke with Blord and his reply is as follows.
"The Copper Dominator laser uses the latest 9mm diode. Capable of 3.5Watt power output. There are no 2Watt versions.."

It is capable of 2W, he probably only makes them driven to 3.5W though. they are actually the last gen 9mm diodes. there are the new ones I mentioned, which are much more powerful, but have worse divergence, as well as a higher price tag. i guess he has not started using them yet. I had one of Blord's Dominators which lasted a few months before the diode degraded, I may use the husk to build one with this new 9mm diode in it. where do you live? country is fine, not asking for specific address. knowing your location helps us help you.

I asked blord the price of the new 9mm, we are looking at $600. think the best option will be to purchase the 2.4.. just waiting for a reply on the run times.

I have updated my location ..I live in the UK.. London...

Personally, from my experience, the blues are crap at burning at any real distance. At 10m, you'll have a ~25mm or bigger line.

You also need a stand of some sort, or extremely steady hands. The further away the target, the harder it is to keep the dot on target.

The Burning at 10mtr in not the important. we are looking at 405nm @ 1w to facilitate burning. this will be a self build. will also ad a variable power output as well.

So, we have finally decided to Purchase a 2.5w. run time 4 mins on, give us the best of both.
